Aster
"Could you read the bottom line for me?"
"P E Z O L C F T D." I read from the chart across the darkened room.
"Okay," the optometrist nodded and flicked on a light, causing me to flinch and squint my eyes. "It seems as though your eyes have remarkable took little to no damage during the accident. All that seemed to be the problem was the occipital lobe of your brain having a hard time 'restarting' if you will."
"So I don't need to do anything?" I asked.
"You could go see Dr. Hale on floor 3 to prescribe you some migraine medicine for the light sensitivity, but it should go away within a week or two. She also might want to take some blood tests to see how your body is adjusting." He answered with a shrug. "As for here, there's nothing left."
"Okay, thank you very much." I thanked as he waved and walked out, leaving me and Josh in the room.
"I told you everything would be okay." Josh grinned as he stood up from one of the uncomfortable plastic chairs in the room.
"Whatever," I scoffed before quickly dropping my act and reaching out for him. He chuckled and stepped forward to wrap me into a loving embrace. I melted into the hug, letting out a long sigh knowing that everything was going to be okay.
"Okay, lets go see Dr. Hale and get out of here." He rushed, practically carrying me out of the room.
"Woah, okay speed racer. I can walk." I laughed as he pulled me into an elevator.
"Sorry," he smiled sheepishly.
"What's the rush? You did cancel the plans with Tyler and Jenna right?" I asked as we made our way to Dr. Hale's office down the hall.
"Yeah, but they wanted to meet us back at our place after we were done here." He blurted quickly. I shrugged it off and walked into Dr. Hale's office after knocking and hearing her call to us to come in.
Dr. Hale took some blood to run some tests, prescribed me some migraine medicine and went over any concerns we could have had before we were out of there and on our way home. The whole drive home Josh wouldn't stop fidgeting in his seat or bouncing his knee of his unoccupied leg.
"Are you alright? You've been fidgety all day." I asked setting a hand on his knee and giving a reassuring squeeze.
"Sorry," he smiled sheepishly, "Just have a lot on my mind."
I nodded as we pulled up to our apartment, recognizing Tyler and Jenna's car parked next to us. "I told them to go inside since I didn't know how long we would be. They probably brought food."
"Thank god, I'm starving." I sighed as I pushed the key into the lock and unlocked the door.
I immediately took in my surroundings, expecting to find Tyler and Jenna rushing up to the door to greet us, but instead I was surrounded by pots of flowers all different shades of yellow and yellow petals scattered across the floor.
"Josh... What is this?" On closer examination I saw Tyler and Jenna on opposite sides of the room, both filming with their phones. "Why are they filming. Josh what's going on? For real, stop fucking around."
"I just thought that when you got your sight back it would be nice to be surrounded by your favorite color." He answered nervously as he closed the door behind us. "I also thought it would be a good time to do this." He spoke before sinking down to the floor on one knee.
I couldn't stop the vicious pounding of my heart against my ribs and the tears buildings up in the corners of my eyes as my breathing started to speed up.
"Aster Lily Montillo, the day I saw you, I knew there was something about you, even without color, that I needed in my life. Falling in love with you might not have been normal, but it's something I will never regret and want to cherish forever. I came so close to losing you once, and I never want to have that happen again. I want to be by your side forever, in life, in death, and everything in between. You make me feel happy and loved and I can't stand to be apart from you. So, with that said," he paused to pull a small box from his hoodie pocket and pop it open to present a simple but beautiful ring to me, and that's when the tears began to fall. "Aster Lily Montillo, would you make me the happiest man alive and marry me?"
