Josh
A knock at the door interrupted the story I was telling Aster as Dr. Hale walked in. "Sorry to interrupt," She smiled, "I just have some stuff to go over with you."
"It's not a problem," Aster replied as I placed her empty bed tray onto a table nearby.
"Okay, so your vitals are doing well, you have a little malnutrition but such is expected from being in a coma for a few months, so that'll return to normal. As for movement, you're going to have to start physical therapy tomorrow morning in order to ensure a fast recovery."
"Do you know anything pertaining to her sight?" I asked curious to the situation.
"All we know right now is that her pupils are still slightly reacting to light so there is a possibility for recovery but she might need some laser surgery to help the process." Dr. Hale paused, "And if there is no recovery, we could help you two adjust to a different way of living."
Aster nodded slowly, "Okay, physical therapy tomorrow morning?"
"That is correct."
"Is Josh allowed to be there?"
"Of course, in fact, we encourage it." Dr. Hale grinned at me. "That's all I have for now, I'll let you know of any other news asap. Have a good evening." And with that she left.
"Josh?"
"Yeah?"
"What if I don't remember? What if I'm permanently blind?" Her breathing started to become irregular and tears were welling up in her eyes.
I quickly moved to sit on the edge of the bed and pull her into my arms. "Hey, don't think about that right now," I hushed, "I'll be your eyes if you go blind, and if you never remember we can make new memories. No matter what happens I'll be there to help you through it."
"I'm sorry I'm such a cry baby."
"You need to learn to stop apologizing for things you can't control." I complained.
She laughed somberly, "I almost said sorry again." I wiped away her tears as she stared at me blankly. "Josh?"
"Yeah?"
"I know this is a weird question, but can I feel your face."
I chuckled at her request, "Yeah, of course."
"Okay please guide my hands so I don't accidentally smack you." She giggled as I placed her hands on either side of my face. Her eyebrows furrowed as she concentrated on the features of my face before she set her hands back on either side.
"Satisfied?" I joked.
"Almost," she replied before moving her hands around my neck and pulling me towards her so that our lips crashed together. I spent no time hesitating to kiss her back, missing every aspect of her. She pulled away with a small smirk, "Now I am."
I chuckled, my face still close to hers and pecked her innocently. "That came out of nowhere."
She shrugged and sat back in the bed, "It felt necessary."
"How do you trust me so much even though you don't remember me?" I blurted.
She frowned and shrugged. "I'm not sure honestly, I just feel safe around you. When I woke up and you were the first person I heard some sense of relief went through me but I couldn't understand why and in all your presence just makes me feel comfortable. I love being by your side."
"I love being by your side too, but if it's ever in a hospital bed for a bad reason again I might actually die." I joked.
"What would be a good reason to be in a hospital bed?" Aster laughed.
"Never mind." I chuckled.
"Oh! Wait!" She laughed, "Oh my god I'm so slow."
"Let drop that now," I laughed.
"No!" She giggled, "No that's cute, I'm happy that you love me that way, and I'll learn to love you that way if I don't remember." She sighed.
"It's okay," I squeezed her hand, "You'll remember."
