I froze. What was I supposed to do? He just kissed me on the lips! I savored it as he stood, helping me to my feet. I followed him, and we met Kat outside of the willow.
"Oh, hey Vergil. And Cassi."
I clenched my jaw. Kat's blood beckoned to me like a moth was drawn to light. I stiffened, and Vergil stepped between us.
"Kat. Have you heard about Cassi?"
"Yes. I understand that I have a higher chance of dying now. She has changed into a vampire."
"A Daywalker."
Her eyes widened, "No way."
Vergil nodded, "Yes. And that means she is a formidable opponent. I have a guy coming over to train her soon."
"Who?"
"A buddy of mine."
Her phone rang, and she turned and walked away from us, chattering on the phone.
"Vergil, why didn't you tell her about Kyle?"
"Because I feel that she has drawn away from us. Something in her has changed. I cannot trust her."
"So I am not the only one who has noticed it?"
Vergil shook his head, glancing at my eyes, "Your eyes are still bright green. You will learn to change the color of those too."
"Why were they red in the first place?"
"You were low on blood. "
Kat snapped her phone shut, turning back towards us, "Sorry, that was a friend of mine. Now what were you saying?"
"I already finished."
She nodded, following us back to the house. We walked in the door, and Kat ran up to Dante, wrapping him in a hug. He seemed somewhat surprised. Kat set her phone down on the table. Her and Dante walked into the kitchen. Vergil sat next to me at the table. I rested my head in my hands, knee bouncing gently.
I could hear Kat and Dante talking about their day so far, and I heard Dante pop open a beer. Vergil nudged me.
"Is her blood bothering you?"
I shook my head, "No, I am just nervous about training tonight. I don't know what to expect."
"There isn't anything to be nervous about. I will be here for the entire time."
"But you have to sleep."
He smiled, "I have gone more than a night without sleep."
"But-"
Kat's phone vibrated in front of us. Vergil looked up at it, and I did the same. Her phone was ringing. Out of curiosity, I leaned forwards.
Kat's caller ID said Mundus. Vergil grabbed the phone, answering it.
"Mundus. "
"Well, isn't this a surprise? Vergil."
"What the hell are you doing calling Kat's phone?"
"The real question is why are you answering it?"
"Because you were calling. Which brings us back to square one: why are you calling Kat's phone? "
"Because she is my secretary and assassin."
Vergil's jaw dropped, and he clicked the end button. He slapped the phone down, moving towards the kitchen , "KAT!!"
I stood, following Vergil through the doors. Something told me Kat was in big trouble.
Vergil walked into the kitchen, pointing directly at Kat, "Dante, get away from her. She is a fucking traitor."
Dante wrapped his arms tighter around her waist, "What are you talking about, Vergil?"
"She's Mundus's secretary and assassin!"
Kat seemed to freeze, but Dante stood up for her, "Oh yeah? Prove it."
"Cassi, get Kat's phone."
I retrieved it, handing it to Vergil. He pressed a few things, and the recording replayed.
"Mundus"
"Well isn't this a suprise? Vergil."
Vergil held an angered face as the recording played.
"Which brings us back to square one: why are you calling Kat's phone? "
Kat seemed to fiddle at Dante's side. She knew she was busted.
" Because she is my secretary and assassin."
Mine and Dante's jaw dropped. Kat was a traitor.
