The Pain

Surprisingly, Jesse's bite didn't hurt as I thought it would. But I am not saying it didn't hurt. It was like getting stung by ten bees in one area.

I struggled underneath him, vision blurring. A bluish-black blur flew past me, ripping Jesse's fangs from my neck. That is when the pain grew unbearable. I glanced up to see Vergil wrestling with Jesse, and Dante joined the fray. Jesse was overpowered and he knew it, fleeing the battle.

I writhed in pain as the warm agony spread through my body. Vergil knelt at my side, turning my neck slightly. I cried out.

"Dante!" he yelled over his shoulder, "Clear the table!"

Before I knew it, I was being carried across the room by Vergil, each step causing even more pain. He gently laid me down, grabbing medical supplies. I panted in pain as my vision spotted. Was I dying?

Vergil pressed the gauze to my neck, trying to staunch the bleeding.

"What is wrong with her, Vergil?"

"Vampire  venom. It is inside of her."

Dante looked up at Vergil, "Do humans even survive the Changing?"

"Some males do, but almost never any females."

I bit my lip. I was in agony, and I could not do anything about it. Vergil tried his hardest to stop the bleeding, but it wasn't working at the moment. What had he said? Vampire venom was inside of me. I am going to change into a vampire.

Females almost never survive the change.

Dante, who was unsure what to do, paced back and forth. I was vaguely aware of Kat and Jasmine, who had joined me beside the table. Vergil's moves were quick, even as the world slowed, and blackness clouded my vision.

"Do something Vergil!" Jasmine exclaimed, "Stop the bleeding!"

"I'm trying."

"Well, what's the problem?"

"This is the reason most females die from the change. They bleed to death. A female's body has different proteins in their body. Their blood reacts differently to the change."

My breathing began to take a dramatic turn for the worst. I found myself gasping for breath, barely able to gulp down any air. I panicked, grasping Dante's wrist as he leaned against the table. He grabbed my arm, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder.

I closed my eyes tightly as Vergil applied more pressure to my neck. I could feel my frantic heartbeat skitter against the wound. My chest hurt, the pain from the venom numbing. My vision gradually blurred, and soon I could not make anyone out. Sounds droned, and I relaxed back, tension leaking from my skin. I had no more strength left, and I closed my eyes, letting the darkness swallow me.

I peeled my eyes apart. It felt like I had just clawed myself to the surface of a black, cold sea. I was shivering, and my neck hurt. I could barely swallow.

"Hey, there she is."

I riveted my eyes to the left, vision focusing on Vergil, who sat on a chair next to me. He was smiling, but his eyes were tired, and bloodshot.

I tried to smile; I am not even sure if I did. He reached forwards, brushing the damp hair from my forehead. He sat next to me, pulling the blanket up to the bottom of my chin.

"God, you're so pale. I finally got the bleeding to stop. I bandaged you up pretty tightly. But the venom took hold, and you are changing as we speak. You lost a lot of blood. That is why you passed out. You've been out for a day and a half."

I opened my mouth to speak, but he covered my mouth, "No. Don't speak. You need to heal."

I nodded, closing my eyes again. He placed his hand on my forehead, "You are burning up."

The chills wracked my body, and I snuggled deeper in the blankets. The door opened, and Dante walked in. I never opened my eyes, but I could hear them whispering to each other.

"How's she doing?"

"She was awake. Did you get the water?"

"Yeah, I got it."

I heard something heavy being set down. Water splashed, and I felt a cool cloth being pressed against my forehead. It felt nice.

"Do you think she will live, Vergil?"

"I... I don't know Dante."

"She is so pale."

"I know."

There was a pause, and I almost fell asleep. But Dante cut in again.

"Oh... my God. You're falling for her, Vergil."

"I am no..... okay, I am. So what? I don't have a problem with you and Kat."

"I never said that I had a problem with it. I just can't believe that my brother actually has a crush."

Oh my god, I thought, so I am not the only one?

Vergil exhaled heavily, "I am afraid of losing her, Dante."

"You won't lose her, Vergil. I can see the fight in her. She is here, and she is here to stay."

"Dante," I heard Vergil stand, "I have come so close to losing her already. I am nervous, stressed. What am I supposed to do?"

"I have an extra beer in the fridge. Oh, and I can roll a joint for you."

"No. Never, I need to be able to control myself in case she takes a turn for the worse."

"Well, then you need to sleep. Being sleep deprived has the same effect as alcohol and drugs. Trust me, I learned from experience."

"I can't even sleep!"

I could almost hear Dante shrug, "I don't know brother."

And that, is when I fell back asleep.
