You keep your body still and watch as everyone else around you walks past. You see faces and names you grew so close to, fumble through the people who remained. The bodies are like swarms of fish pushing against the current.
Winona knows of your choice before Ballard does. She senses it, possibly. She looks down at you with a soft expression, a hint of sadness in her eyes. She begins to walk, leaving Ballard behind.
Ballard almost begins to follow her until he sees the unmoving bodies. Valencia and Calum stand still next to you. Ballard stops. He almost attempts to grab all three of you, to drag you with him, but he keeps his arms at his sides.
His eyes gloss over all three of you. His face begins to fill with sorrow, his lips parting to speak, but he's confused as to what to say. He finally forces himself to walk with the swarm. You can see the light gleam of his hair above the moving bodies until his outline disappears into the darkness.
Captain Erwin, one of the Scout Regiment's leaders, called the leftovers to a salute. You could hear the slam of all the fists upon chests. You'd have to give your heart up for humanity.
