"I'm planning on joining the Military Police."

He raised his eyebrows a little before he threw a punch into your side.

"I could see that. You're going to be high in the ranking."

You laughed. "Nowhere near Ballard or Winona, though. I'm just trying."

You threw a punch near his chest, grazing a small part of your knuckles on the boy's chain necklace. It's impossible to see what's on the end of the necklace - his jacket covered the entirety.

"That's one thing you do different from most of the people here." He repeated after seeing your confused expression, "Trying, that is."

There was a moment of silence between you two, but it wasn't awkward, the silence was more thoughtful.

"Why are you joining the Scouts?"

"To die." He waited a moment to see your reaction before smirking. "I'm kidding. I want to go outside the walls."

"You want to see Titans?"

"No, no. I want to see the things beyond the walls. Nature."

"Oh," the sun began to set and the Captain marked the end of the practice. "That's a nice reason."

It was a nice reason, but he was most likely going to die not long after he stepped outside the walls with the Scout Regimen. You both gave your goodbyes before you met up with your friends before nightfall.
