The man's green cloak drifted in the breeze, blood smeared along his arms and pants. He stood with his back to you, his blades resting at his sides. You attempted to reach for him, to touch him just once, to turn him around.
Help, you tried to say. Help me.
The words never seem to be able to escape your throat.
~
"Are you alright? Do you need water or something?"
Your vision remains completely black for a few seconds more. You blink your eyes frantically in an attempt to see once again.
Everything suddenly turns bright. In front of you is a trainee, a face without a name. You recognized the prominent features, a soft nose crooked on the end, a thin top lip. You never remembered the trainees name.
"No, no, I'm fine." You stumbled out of bed, the sheets tousled at your feet. The trainee waits for a second more before hesitantly leaving your side. You search your bedside for clothing, quickly changing and pulling and twisting.
Today was the last day of training. Today was the last day of being together with everyone. Today was the day you found your rank and chose your branch.
~
"I'm joining the Military Police." Mika chirped across breakfast.
Seung swallowed his oatmeal, "Me, too."
The Nameless boy stayed quiet, looking around the room at all the other trainees. The boy would join the Scouting Legion. You wondered what everyone else was going to join. You pulled at the sleeves of your shirt in anticipation.
The day drifted off. You couldn't remember what you ate for breakfast or what had happened all day. Everyone was brought into this square, a stage for speaking above the crowd. The Captain began to list names for the top ten from the lowest to highest rank. The following people would have the option to join the military police:
"Kaiyo Nakada"
What did you have for breakfast?
"Isaiah Goman."
Cereal? Buttered bread? A Bagel?
"Friduman Weber."
Cereal. Definitely cereal.
"Seung Kym."
Your eyes grew large. You turned to look at Seung next to you, his smile ecstatic.
"Blake Schmitt."
Schmitt was sixth. There were only a few more spots left. Mika held tightly onto Seung's arm.
"Cadence Caverly."
Your eyes flicked to Mika and then back to the Captain. He scrolled his eyes down the list once more.
"Y/N L/N."
Seung smiled for you, others turning to look at your gaze, silent acts of congratulatory. Mika held limply now onto Seung's arm.
"Calum Buhari. Winona Wolfe. Ballard Jesperson." The Captain folded the paper neatly and tucked it back into his breast pocket. He then welcomed speakers from each branch to persuade the trainees to join.
Mika held back tears while listening. You could hear her sniffles and see her wipe her face with the edge of her sleeve. Seung said nothing to her.
"It'd be an honor to have the top ten ranked soldiers protecting the king." the Military Police leader, Nile Dok, stated passionately. In the corner of your eyes, Mika bit her bottom lip sharply.
The service ended with the Scouting Legion pleading for soldiers.
"Anyone wishing to join the Scouting Legion, stay. Anyone wishing to join one of the other branches, line up with the commanders."
This was it. This was everything you had been working towards - the final decision. It could make your life amazing or completely destroy it.
Which branch do you join?
Join the Military Police (chapter 69)
Join the Garrison (chapter 68)
Join the Scouts (chapter 67)
