HAPPIER

"You," Jamie began, pointing a finger at Tyler, "are going out to drink with us."
Tyler rolled his eyes as he stuffed his gear into a bag. "No, I'm not."
"C'mon, Segs, you haven't gone out with us in over a month," Jordie whined.
"I don't feel like it," Tyler told them.
"Where'd the party Tyler we knew and loved go?" Jordie joked.
He died the same day she broke my heart, Tyler wanted to say but he kept his comment to himself as he picked up his bag and started walking away.
"Just this once, Tyler," Jamie begged. "Please?"
Tyler sighed as he turned around. "Fine."
The two brothers celebrated, high-fiving each other. Tyler just scoffed at the celebrating before leaving the room.
Tyler hadn't been okay for a while - it was a fact that everyone could see. His heart had been shattered by a girl by the name of (Your Name).
He first met her at a Dallas Stars game, where he spotted her looking at him through the glass in warm-ups. Her smiled captivated him and he decided that he had to see her again. So, he wrote his number on a puck and tossed it to her over the glass. He would never forget the look on her face.
They had started texting that night and he asked her out the next day. It only took one night for him to realize he was falling for her. It didn't take long for him to fall head over heels in love with her.
They had dated for about a year. She made Tyler so happy, he couldn't imagine what things would be like without her. Truthfully, he thought he would never have to go through that.
Obviously, he was wrong.
It had been over a month since she broke up with him. She had never really given him a reason; she just got up and left. It was as if it didn't even affect her at all, and it tore Tyler apart. He wondered what he had done wrong, why he hadn't been enough for her. It hurt more than anything.
He didn't want to go anywhere. He was afraid of seeing her again. He was afraid of looking at her again and remembering all the things they could have been. He was afraid that he was going to see that she'd already moved on with someone else. He was afraid of being broken even more.
-
Tyler rolled his eyes at a joke Jordie had made, looking around the bar as he took a sip of his beer. From across the room, he thought he could see a familiar (Hair Color) girl entering the bar. She was looking up at another guy, smiling brightly and laughing. His heart immediately sunk into his chest.
She was here.
He got up, excusing himself quietly. Jamie asked where he was going but Tyler didn't listen. He headed straight for the bathroom, which he knew would be quiet. He barged into the room, not caring if there was anyone inside. Luckily, there wasn't, and he closed and locked the door behind him.
He looked at himself in the mirror, studying his face carefully. His hair was still sort of a mess from practice: he reached up and fixed it with his hand. He could see the dark circles under his eyes that had been caused by the lack of sleep that came with missing her. He could see his blank expression staring back at him, but it didn't look blank at all. His eyes were filled with so much pain and sadness that he hadn't even noticed before.
For the first time, he noticed how bad he really looked.
Tyler exited the bathroom, joining his teammates again.
"What was that about?" Jamie questioned as Tyler sat down.
"Nothing," he dismissed as he lifted his bottle and downed the rest of the beer in a few large gulps.
Jordie chuckled. "Seems like you missed this, huh?"
Jamie gave him a look, wiping the smile off his brother's face. Tyler scanned the room again. This time he found (Your Name) sitting alone, looking down at her phone.
"Be right back," he muttered, getting up again and walking towards her.
(Your Name) looked over at the sound of him sitting down. She froze slightly when she saw him.
"Oh, um, hi, Tyler," she greeted with a small smile.
"Hi," he said, flashing her a smile before looking down at the table.
"So, how have you been?" (Your Name) asked. Tyler looked up at her and she looked like she knew her mistake.
"Well, I-"
"(Your Name), who's this?" a man questioned as he walked up to them.
"Oh, (Boy's Name)," she greeted. "This is Tyler," she paused, thinking of the right word to say, "and old friend."
-
"Excuse me for a moment," (Your Name) said, getting up. Tyler watched her walk away, turning back only when she was mostly out of sight. An awkward silence fell between him and (Boy's Name).
"What do you want with my girlfriend?"
"What?"
"I said, what do you want with my girlfriend?" he repeated.
"Well, the truth is," Tyler began. "I dated her. I loved her more than anything and I still do, but she broke my heart."
"Tyler-"
"Don't worry about me. She's happier with you anyway."
