Michelle laughed loudly, smiling over at her boyfriend, Jake, as he sung along loudly to Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars; their song. Whenever Michelle decided to play it in the car, he always insisted on belting it out, no matter how bad he sounded. She loved it. It was one of the reasons she loved him so much.
"Focus on the road, babe," she warned, knowing that he was most likely paying more attention to the song then the interstate ahead.
"I am, Michelle," he told her, "don't worry."
She rolled her eyes. "I'm serious, Jake."
"I know, baby," he said, glancing over at her. "I'll be careful."
Michelle heard the sound of tires screeching against pavement before she saw anything. Her head snapped up to see the car ahead of them spinning out of control.
Jake slammed on the brakes, trying desperately to move out of the way of the out of control car, which had slowed down significantly. He was too late, however, and Michelle watched in horror as the front of their car slammed into the side of the one in front of them.
Michelle screamed, and an immeasurable amount of pain overcoming her. Her vision was blurry and she felt blood trickling down the side of her face as she looked over at Jake, whose body was completely limp and lifeless.
"Jake," she gasped, trying with all her might to reach out to him. She wasn't strong enough, however, and her arm fell as her eyelids slid shut.
---
When Michelle first met Jake, she had been hit with a sense of deja vu. It was an incredibly odd feeling to her. It hadn't happened to her often, but the second she saw Jake's face, it began happening often.
It scared her. Since she was a kid, her parents had told her that when she died, she would be reborn. Frankly, she didn't believe in the whole rebirth story nearly as much as they did, but she went along with it like the sweet child she was. Because she had been exposed to this at such a young age, Jake's familiarity terrified her at first. Could this boy be someone that had mattered to her in her past life, so much that she could recognize him in her current life?
At first, she brushed it off as best she could. If he really was someone she had known, what would she do? As she and Jake became good friends, she still found herself lost when it came to finding an answer.
Michelle had managed to forget about the whole previous life thing most of the time, until one night. Jake was at her house, helping her study for a math test when Just The Way You Are began playing. Michelle smiled--she'd always loved this song--but when Jake started singing, she froze.
All of a sudden, it was like everything was coming back to her. Jake smile, their first kiss, the countless hours they spent together, simply enjoying his company. It made Michelle want to cry. She had met Jake in another life, and she remembered everything.
When the scene shifted to an awful car crash, she had to shut her eyes. She couldn't bear to see the awful scene that she had been involved in. When she opened them, Jake was sitting in front of her, clearly concerned.
"Are you okay?" he questioned frantically.
"I'm fine," she assured, though she was anything but. Jake didn't believe her for a second but decided to simply leave her alone and keep studying.
The next few days were eye-opening for Michelle. Her parent had been right, and it blew her mind. It was so surreal. She had lived a previous life; a life with Jake. Not only were they friends, but she was in love with him, and he was in love with her. They were together.
Michelle now understood why she was so in love with Jake.
On the other hand, the change in Michelle worried Jake greatly. He hoped that it wasn't anything he had done. He didn't want to bother her with his worries and try to force an answer out of her, so he left it alone.
That was, however, until the next time he was at her house. For some reason, she had still invited him over, but she had barely said anything since they had arrived. It was driving Jake crazy.
"What is going on, Michelle?" he eventually had to ask. "Was it something I did?"
She looked up at him sadly. "No, Jake, it's..."
"Just tell me what's wrong," he said softly. "You're worrying me sick."
Michelle sighed, looking away. "Do your parents ever talk about being reborn?" She glanced up, and he nodded. "I always thought they were full of shit, but I think they were right. That time last week, where I spaced out, I remembered everything. We knew each other in a past life. You were the love of my life, Jake. You are."
Jake just looked at her, trying to comprehend her words. He wanted to believe her, but he had never believed anything his parents had said and he was sure Michelle had just fallen victim to her parents' crazy beliefs.
"Jake, please," she begged. "You have to believe me."
"I'm sorry, Michelle," he told her, beginning to pack up his things. Michelle blinked back tears as she watched. "I'm sorry you decided to believe all that shit."
Michelle could practically feel her heart break as her love--in more than one life--walked out the door.
