NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR

-

(Your Name) sighed, tucking her hair behind her ear as she looked down at her phone. She had gotten off of a long day at work and was looking forward to changing out of the tight and uncomfortable clothes she was wearing and into pajamas. It was Friday, which was nice, but this meant that the work day had felt especially long.

As she rounded to corner into the hallway that lead to her apartment, she bumped into someone. She juggled her phone for a moment before catching it and looking up at the man, slightly flustered.

"I'm so sorry!" she exclaimed. Though she thought she knew everyone that lived on the floor, she didn't recognize him. He was moving in, perhaps. "I should have been looking where I was going."

"It's alright," the man replied, smiling at him. He's cute, (Your Name) thought. "Nice catch."

"Oh, thanks," she said, smiling as she looked down at her phone. "Hey, are you moving in? I haven't seen you here before."

"Yeah, actually. I'm just moving the last box or two," he explained. "I'm Jake."

"(Your Name)." She glanced down at his shirt. Bruins, nice. "What apartment are you moving into?"

"432," Jake told her.

"Really? I'm in 430," she said. "We're neighbors!"

"How perfect."

(Your Name) just smiled back at him because damn, he really needed to stop smiling like that.

"Well, uh, I should probably bring the rest of my things inside," Jake said, looking away as he broke the awkward silence that had fallen between them.

"Oh, yeah," she said, blushing in embarrassment. "Do you need any help?"

"Oh, uh, I think I've got it. I'll talk to you later though, right?" he said, glancing back up at her.

"Yeah, of course," she said, smiling at him though she was slightly disappointed that she didn't get to talk to him longer. "See you around, Jake."

As she walked away, though she knew she had never met him, she found something oddly familiar about him.

The next morning, they ran into each other again(not literally, this time). They seemed to both be leaving their apartments at the same time.

"Good morning, Jake," she greeted, smiling over at him.

"Morning," he greeted back, matching her smile with one of his own. "Where are you off to?"

"Nothing interesting. Just grocery shopping," she told him. "What about you?"

"I'm actually going to hockey practice," he said.

"That's cool! Where do you play?" (Your Name) questioned, her curiosity about the cute man that had moved in next door growing.

"Actually, I, uh," he looked away as if he was unsure of what to say. "I play for the Bruins."

She smiled. "I thought you looked familiar. You're a rookie, I assume?" He nodded. "That's awesome! I'm not a big hockey fan but I have a few friends that are."

Jake grinned. "We can certainly change that. How about you come over to my place tonight and I'll tell you all you need to know. I'm not fully moved it, but it looks good enough."

(Your Name) tried and failed to hide her grin. Smooth, she thought. "That'd be great. What time works for you?"

"7?" he offered.

"Sounds good to me," she told him. "Also, I'm sure your apartment looks fine."

"Good enough to invite a pretty girl in, yeah."

She blushed, looking away and missing Jake's blush. "Then it's a date."
