"Hey, you remember that guy I told you about? The one who saved me from Tyler exploding the other day?" I asked Ben while I twirled my pen, looking at my homework for Pre-Calc.
Currently we were in our study hall period. I had it fourth period, so I decided to wait to do my Pre-Calc homework till now. I stared down at the mixture of numbers and letters jumbled along the page. I hadn't been paying attention for the last few days, and I didn't understand a thing on this paper. Basically I was screwed. Oh well.
"Yeah, what about him?" Ben sounded slightly annoyed.
"He invited me to his party Friday."
"Do you even know anything about this guy?" Ben looked up from his chemistry textbook.
"I know he is blonde, tall, and I'm pretty sure he is a senior."
"That narrows it down to fifty percent of the senior class." His words dripped with contempt and I rolled my eyes.
"He said his name was Jake."
"Wait. Blonde, senior, Jake? Are you talking about Jacob Summers?"
"I guess." I shrugged.
"He invited you to his party?" I nodded my head and he whistled. "His parties are legendary!"
"Well we're going." I stated.
"I don't know, Becca. We have all of next year to go to parties." Ben hesitated.
If I live that long.
"You said Jake's parties are legendary, right? Well he's a senior; we won't get a chance to go to one of his parties next year. Come on, Ben! Please?" I tugged on his arm and pouted.
He scrunched his face up with hesitation, but he rolled his eyes and gave in. "Fine, we'll go."
"Thank you, thank you, thank you!" I wrapped him in a hug.
He laughed as I continued to squeeze him. I let go when my phone started to vibrate in my boot. I took it out of my black combat boot and looked at the caller ID. Hope Mercy Hospital. I declined the call; I could not deal with that right now. I couldn't let myself think about what was wrong with me- not right now.
"Who was it?" Ben asked as I put my phone back in my boot.
"Wrong number." I lied with a smile.
When the bell rang, Ben put his textbook in his backpack, and I put my unfinished homework in mine. We walked out the door and I expected Ben to be right next to me, but he started walking the opposite way.
"Where are you going? Lunch is this way." I pointed ahead of me.
"I have a chemistry test to make up, remember?"
"Ughhhh!" I pouted at him.
"Sorry, Becca. I'll see you later." He gave me an apologetic smile. He started to walk away.
When I got into the lunchroom, I got a slice of pizza and some fries. I sat down in mine and Ben's usual table in the corner by myself. I was debating about whether or not I should give the hospital a call back- they have called me three times, and I've ignored them every time. Before I could make up my mind, someone tapped me on the shoulder.
