I stood in front of a cherrywood door with a golden plaque set in the middle that read, Headmistress Collins. I probably looked like I was being sent off to my execution with my slumped shoulders and the nervous twitch in my fingers- at least it sure felt like I was.
You only get sent to the headmistresses office if you've done something exceptionally bad. Axel's eyes even went slightly wide in fear after the announcement was made over the school's PA system. I guess my whole defying the dress code stunt was on the list of exceptionally bad things.
Whoops.
I squeezed my hand into a fist and knocked on the door.
"Come in," Came a brassy voice from the other side of the door.
I heaved a sigh as I turned the doorknob. When I walked in the first thing I noticed was the antique looking globe that rested upon a massive desk. Behind said elephant sized desk sat the dark haired headmistress. Her features were set in a constant state of intimidating authority.
She really would look quite lovely if she smiled, my fleeting thought momentarily whisked away my nerves. I then chided myself that I should be paying attention.
"You wished to see me, headmistress?"
"Yes. Please take a seat, Miss Woods." She gestured to one of the chairs sitting across from her desk.
I walked over to the seat cautiously. I knew I had to bite back my snark and behave before I got myself into anymore trouble than I was no doubtfully already in. For the first time in awhile, I thought being Rebecca would work out far better in my favor than being Bex at the moment.
"Do you know why I called you here today, Miss Woods?" She folded her hands on top of a file on her desk.
"Because I'm not in my uniform, m'am?"
"Partly, but that is not the main reason," She opened the file on her desk, adjusting her glasses on the bridge of her nose. "According to your transcript your grades have been dropping, you've been getting into detention lately, and now this?"
She looked up at me with disappointed eyes, removing her glasses. I didn't like that look coming from her- the look that said 'I know you're better than this'. But she didn't know me at all. I balled my hands in my lap and with a stubborn set to my jaw, I turned my face away from her.
"What has caused this sudden erratic change in behavior?"
Maybe my sudden erratic change in behavior has something to do with me being diagnosed with freaking cancer! Just a theory though.
"It's complicated, m'am." I opted for saying instead.
"Is there a personal situation going on at home? A bullying incident? Running around in the wrong circles?"
I kept silent as she tried to figure out the cause of my erratic behavior, not once meeting her dark eyes. After a few more offending guesses, I started to lose my patience.
"Can you just give me my punishment already, and I'll be on my way."
"I'm not punishing you, Miss Woods." Her authoritative voice rang in my ears.
"Pardon?"
I must have fell and hit my head on the way to her office, and I am now passed out somewhere dreaming.
"I said, I'm not going to punish you."
I would say she was joking, but something tells me she isn't the humorous type. She looked calm and collected; her steady gaze held my confused one.
