Morgan walked into the choir room Tuesday after school to see Kellie holding a list. She was curious but didn't think anything of it at all. After everyone had filed in Kellie cleared her throat.
"Hello Mane Stage, first I would like to congratulate you on getting second place. That definitely is an accomplishment in and among itself. Most groups don't do so well on their first competition. But anyhow, I have chosen who does solo comp this year," Kellie said. Ashley raised her hand.
"What is 'solo comp'?" She asked. Kellie smiled.
"I wondered if a freshman would ask. So Solo comp, or soloist competition, is a secondary part of show choir. Solo comp is where one person will perform before or after their show choir performs, and they are critiqued by a judge that only judges soloists. It is performed by anyone usually, but Tryverg is known to choose the best singer out of everyone. When you all did solo auditions, I chose who I felt was a good candidate. Usually the person has a solo in the show, but this year they don't," Kellie said. The room was filled with confused whispers from the older students.
"This year the person I chose is..." Kellie paused and the room was filled with a drum roll of feet on the risers.
"Morgan Christensen!" She announced. Most everyone cheered for her. All but two. Arianna and Abygale didn't cheer. Arianna rolled her eyes and Abygale's mouth fell wide open.
"I'm in what???" Morgan asked, shocked.
"You are in solo comp Morgan!! This is so exciting! We have to hold a party for you!" Kelsey exclaimed, excitedly. Morgan shook her head.
"No no, there has got to be a mistake..." She said. Kellie shook her head.
"Nope I didn't make a mistake. You are the best singer we have out of both groups," she said. "Let's continue with practice!"

Morgan was in the bathroom during a break from practice. She heard two girls come in the room, and she thought she heard her name, so she stayed quiet.
"Ugh, why does Morgan get the solo? I performed better than she did, and I certainly don't have stage fright," Abygale's familiar voice rang. Morgan stifled a gasp.
"I know Abby, you totally deserve it more than she does. She is just a freshman, where we are sophomores. We should have won for duet. At least we know how to perform," Arianna responded. Morgan heard Abygale scoff.
"Like I would sing a duet with you. I would rather sing a duet with that hottie Gavin. I'm sure he isn't too happy to have been beat by a female freshman," Abygale said. Arianna snickered.
"I heard he doesn't care. I think he likes her. That freshman even realized that we were lying about Gavin having a girlfriend. What was your plan if she asked who it was? Tell her it is you?" She asked.
"Of course. I felt chemistry in Chemistry yesterday when we were lab partners. Besides, he could do way better. But she won't perform," Abygale said.
"I bet you that she will run from the judging room, crying."
___________________________"Morgan, that's wonderful!! Solo competition!! Do you know what song you will sing?" Morgan's mom asked in the car on the way home.
"Yeah, Kellie let me pick out the song. I'm going to sing Try by Colbie Calliat," she said.
"Of course you are," her mom joked. They laughed. Morgan couldn't help but think about what Abygale and Arianna said about her. "I bet you that she will run from the judging room, crying." They are wrong! I won't give up! I can't give up. I just need to believe in my strength. I should be able to do it. With practice of course.
