Alex POV:

They stayed with Hope for about 40 minutes before the previous nurse came to pick her. Tests needed to be run and so they wheeled his girl away. Alex was somewhat reluctant to let her go, but knew the tests were imperial and protocol before any surgery, so he said nothing. After he waved his daughter, he sat in one of the chairs into the room and turned his gaze to Selen. She, as well as him, had been devastated by the news, but had managed to keep quiet in front of their baby.

“What did the doctor say?”- Maria asked, shaking him from his thoughts.

“Wilms Tumor,”- Selen simply stated, through closed eyes and white knuckles. At the mention of those words Maria gasped, whilst that Michael guy stood there with wide eyes.

“what’s that?”- Maria inquirer again.

“Some sort of tumor that affects children in one or both kidneys.”- Alex clarified.

“What now?”- their male friend asked and Alex shot him an annoyed look.

“Now we dance around the fire, chanting Kumbaya”- Alex sarcastically retorted, rolling his  eyes. Surely he thought that was a normal thing to say, since he didn’t like that guy a bit. However Selen didn’t think so and that ‘what the fuck' look she gave him was proof of that.

“She has to undergo surgery, and the doctors are very hopefully of the outcome.”- she politely answered his answer and gave another glance to Alex, who on the other hand was studying Michael’s face. Watching him go from concerned to wanting to punch his ass off was highly entertaining… well at least in the day they had.

“I can’t believe it!”- Maria brought him back on Earth again, as he saw tears stream down her cheeks. Somehow he wanted to console her too. From what Selen had told him, she had played a major role in his daughter’s life so far and for that he was going to be eternally grateful. Moreover, he understood how hard it must be for her too. He had spent less that two days with his child and had completely fallen in love with her; had completely given her his heart on a gold plate with no resistance whatsoever; so he could understand the love and pain Maria must feel at the wake of such a news.

“She will be alright,”- he repeated his chant for who knows how many times now and as always he meant it.

The rest of that morning passed with him listening silently to whimpers, tears, sobs and consolation words. He knew he should have been a part of them, but he couldn’t. All he could do was sit in that chair and this k of all the possible outcomes of the surgery. At one moment, he picked up his phone and texted Bill to find him the best specialist in his daughter’s case.

While waiting for the reply, he couldn’t help but notice that Michael was now hugging Selen. Instantly his blood started to boil a little and he felt the sudden urge to rip his arms slowly and painfully. Wanting to push aside this murderous thoughts, he left the room without as much as a glance at the scenery that so bothered him.

With the phone in his hand and out of the room, he couldn’t help but notice the 67 missed calls and 32 messages from Vivian. Muttering a curse under his breath for completely forgetting to notify her in all the haste and tension he had been through the past 28 hours, he dialed her number.

“Where the fuck are you?”- his wife’s shouts welcomed him just as soon as she picked the phone up.

“I have been worried sick! I called the police seven times! Where the fuck were you Alexander Sebastian Hall?!”- she kept on shouting and he had to distance the phone from his ear for a few seconds.

“Calm down Vivian,”- he simply stated. Honestly he was in no condition to handle anyone’s screaming in his ear, what with the day he had had and all, but he knew he had fucked up in not letting her know his whereabouts. And that was another thing that troubled him. Tell her what? That he had a baby? He couldn’t help but feel utterly guilty towards his wife, specially since he was a father when they had lost their baby back then. Rubbing his hand against his forehead, he waited for her to finish yelling and all.

After what felt like deafening minutes, she finally stopped to breathe and he knew that was his chance.

“Viv, I’m sorry I didn’t let you know and I’m sorry you were worried. You are right, I should have contacted you, but believe me, it wasn’t intentional. I’m alright and I’ll tell you everything once I get home. Actually, I’ll be there in one hour, so till then please breath. “- he told her.

After finishing the conversation with his wife, he went back in to let Selen know he'd be absent for a couple of hours. Hope's tests were going to take long and she'd probably fall fast asleep once she was in the bed again.

And so, muttering quick byes and giving an ‘I’ll be back soon' look to the only person that mattered most to him in that room, he left. As he made his way towards the hospital’s parking lot, he braced himself for the storm he was heading towards.
