Do you realize how important it is to be independent? To be able to take care of yourself? To not rely on someone else for your most basic needs? And to not get so damn attached to stuff that you'd rather demean yourself than live without it?
"Are you sure you have to do this?" Luke asked his wife after they had reached the base she was leaving from.
"I'm positive, Baby. I promise you, I will come back to you again" CJ smiled sweetly at her husband placing a loving hand on Luke's face.
"I knew what I was getting myself into the day I asked you to be my girlfriend all those years ago. Go make the world safe, we'll be here waiting for you to come home" Luke smiled with Gunner in his arms as they stood on the tarmac before she was deployed again but he would always be here for Chris no matter how long.
"Mama!" Gunner exclaimed reaching out for CJ making both Luke and Chris's hearts break.
"I'll be back soon, Baby. I promise. It's you and Daddy's turn to bond. I love you, my little trouper" she smiled as she took him into her arms and kissed him wishing she wouldn't have to let him go.
As she handed her son back to her husband a tear slipped from her eye. She wiped it away quickly and gave Luke a kiss before picking up her bag and walking away to the cargo plane her team was waiting for her on. As Luke and Gunner watched Chris walk away Luke kissed his son's hair that had gotten long reminding him of Chris's hair.
As she stepped foot on the ramp she looked back to see Gunner waving frantically at her and so she waved back. He was only one now but he had still gone through so much. That child had slept through so many bombings and gun fights that were close by only to wake when she spoke close to him. Gunner had made sleeping in the middle of a war-torn country so much easier because he was a little bit of peace in Hell.
She knew he would be good for Luke not only would he be a good baby for him but he would help keep his mind off of her being gone. While she would be gone the band would be on tour and Brianna had promised to go with them and help take care of Gunner so she knew he was in good hands. As she sat down in her seat and buckled up she felt a pang of sadness hit her chest, but she knew she had to deal with it for the safety of others, especially those on her team. Chris pulled a picture of her, Gunner, and Luke out of her breast pocket and held onto the knowledge that she was doing this for them.
"We're ready if you are, Captain Hemmings" one of the pilots spoke looking back into the cargo area to where Chris was sitting.
"Let's go. The sooner we leave the faster we can come home" she sighed as she watched the cargo ramp slowly close and she lost visual of her husband and son in person until they were able to come home.
