Lily's P.O.V

'That went fairly well' James said casually walking out of the prefects compartment.

'Yeah I suppose, and erm... thanks for well you know. That after, well... them' I said smiling sheepishly and a little bit awkwardly.

'No, no don't worry about it' he said waving his hand up.

Erm... did James Potter actually do something nice and be modest about it?!

'Anyway they deserved it' he added grimly and I thought back to the encounter I'd just had.

*Flashback*

'Okay everyone hi so I'm Lily Evans, Head Girl this year and this is...'

'James Potter, Quidditch captain and now Head Boy' James finished proudly.

I laughed briefly, and not the type of sarcastic laugh I usually use with him but it was a genuine laugh. It was better being friends with James than enemies. Well him asking me out to humiliate me and me constantly rejecting him.

I rambled on about ideals, rules, regulations and timetables for rounds. Which is when the two Slytherin prefects Lucius Malfoy and Narcissa Black interrupted.

'Are you joking? We're patrolling 5 floor corridors for 3 nights a week for 2 hours starting 10 pm?' Narcissa said incredulously.

'What? No, we have better things to do with our time' Malfoy added in agreement.

'Well Malfoy, if the these jobs are too advanced for you I can happily take it up with Professor Dumbledore' I said now annoyed.

'I'm sorry I don't speak mudblood, what did you say?' Malfoy retorted and Narcissa snorted.

I was stunned. I'd obviously been called a mudblood more than once but the last time it happened was in fifth year, by Sev-Snape. Everyone gasped and held their breath.

'Look Malfoy I don't care what you are your cronies think about this so called 'blood purity' but just because someone gave you a reasonable job you didn't want to do, gives you no right to discriminate someone when they have absolutely nothing to you. Now take your timetable or take it up with Dumbledore' James had said this with such anger piercing his every word that he even scared me a bit. But soon after my entire body filled with gratitude.

'That concludes our meeting, thank you everyone' James said smiling until he reached the Slytherins, his faced dropped and he sneered.

'Oh and by the way Malfoy that's two weeks detention and your missing the first quidditch match of the season' James said quietly while everyone made they're way out.

As they were leaving I heard the Slytherins muttering and I managed to make out sounded like 'my father will hear about this!'

All the while I was blushing furiously and tried to hide it until I thanked James.

Maybe James had changed for the better.

*End of flashback*

'Thanks again' I thanked him again still filled with gratitude.

'Lily! Honestly it's fine. You know I never get tired of hearing your voice but if you say 'thank you' one more time--' he trailed off laughing and I quickly joined in.
