Chapter 13 - The Moment

James' P.O.V

'Oh. My. God! Did you hear about Lily Evans?!'

'Yes! I can't believe this happened!'

'I know. I feel so bad for her!'

'Should we go see her?'

'Not at the moment, she won't want to see anyone.'

I must have heard about a dozen girls talking about Lily as I was walking back from the Yule Ball meeting. Why was everyone talking about Lily today?! She's the same girl as always.

'Hey.' I greeted Sirius as he walked up to me with Remus, both looking grim.

'Hey. Have you seen this?' Sirius said in a dull tone holding up a piece of new parchment that was slightly torn at the edges as though it had been grabbed harshly several times.

'No. What is it?' I gently picked it up and examined the top. The Ministry of Magic crest.

'It's Lily's.' Remus said sadly.

'Then I'd rather not read it.' I handed the parchment to Remus walking away.

'You haven't read it yet! James this serious!' Sirius said in a stern voice I'd never heard him use.

'No, you're Sirius!' I said irritated.

'Hey! I am the only one allowed to make 'Sirius is serious' jokes!' Sirius snapped.

'Oh yeah sorry, I forgot.' I said sarcastically.

'Will you just read this?'

'No. What ever it is Lily doesn't need my help.' I said slightly unsure of myself.

'Yes she does!'

'Well I don't believe she does.' I retorted stubbornly.

'Because you don't want to.' Sirius said. A moment of clarity came over me and I realised he was right. I wanted to keep my distance from Lily because of how awkward and hard it would be to talk to her again. So I pushed her away and assumed she'd be fine without me. But she might not be.

'You two argue like your married. Can you just read this?' Remus inputted.

I held out my hand and reluctantly held the parchment to my vision, my eyes scanned the letter over and over until I could fully comprehend what I had read. No wonder everyone was talking about Lily.

'Where did you find this?'

'A bunch of girls were crowding around it, said they found it on the floor of the Great Hall after Marlene, Mary and Alice left.' Remus answered.

'I need to talk to Lily.' I said and ran up the staircase skipping steps.

'Good luck Prongs!' Sirius shouted after me.

Lily's P.O.V

'Come in.' I grudgingly opened my eyes after being awoken by someone frantically knocking on my door.

The door burst open and the first thing I saw was a pair of warm hazel eyes. I smiled and for a moment thought I was still dreaming.

'Lily? Are you... okay?' James said in a voice barely louder than a whisper.

'No.' I said simply before his arms fixed perfectly around me and I felt secure in his strong embrace.
