Chapter 8 - Misplaced Guilt and Misunderstandings

James' P.O.V

'Are you sure that she will wake up?' I asked Madam Pompfrey for the... 10th time. I couldn't help myself. It was my fault. I collapsed into the chair next to the bed where Lily lay pale, stiff and asleep. It was my fault she was like this.

'Yes, Potter I am' she nodded to me reassuringly 'now can you tell me what happened?'

'Well, I was actually trying to find Lily when Snape came up to me and challenged me to a duel, I told him I couldn't and his little cronie Goyle blocked off the other end of the corridor. I told him to get it over with, and he got distracted I tried to disarm him but I knocked him off his feet. Lily ran in front of me because he shouted this spell... that I haven't ever heard before.' I finished and realised I'd never heard the spell Snape had used.

'Well, I called Professor Dumbledore an-- oh here he is. Professor Dumbledore.' Dumbledore came into the hospital wing with McGonagall in tow.

'What happened Potter?' McGonagall turned to me. I really didn't feel like going over the events with someone else again so I went through it as quickly as I could.

'Do you have any idea what the spell might have been James?' Dumbledore asked me calmly.

'It sounded like... two words put together, something like 'sector', but I'm still not quite sure.' Trying to remember what happened, seeing that image of Lily again, on the floor after protecting me, weak and limp, I'll kill Snape. If he ever lays a finger on her again--

'I've managed to stop the bleeding and there won't be any scarring, she'll wake up I just don't think it will be until tomorrow.' Madam Pompfrey was running from one end of the hospital wing to another, getting things from cupboards and taking things from shelves.

'Thank you Poppy, we just need to know who else was involved' Dumbledore turned to me again.

'Well Snape had cast the spell' they all nodded and waited for me to continue 'Malfoy was blocking off one end of the corridor and Goyle the other end.'

'Well, if they could be anywhere trying to make themselves an alibi.' McGonagall said.

'Yes, well when they return we will discuss the consequences' Dumbledore nodded goodbye to us all and left with McGonagall.

'You can stay if you want Potter' I nodded and she walked into her office.

Why did Lily have to do that? Why couldn't it be in this hospital bed? I can feel moisture in my eyes, and I can't help but it fall. The girl, the amazing witch that I love is here because of m-- wait... did I say I... loved her?

The little voice inside my head and I continued to argue until I got distracted by something.The sun was shining through the windows and I turned away as the light reflected on my glasses, creating a bright circle on Lily's face.

The colour drained from my face. How could I forget?! The full moon! Tonight! Remus, Sirius, Peter and I were supposed to meet in the Gryffindor tower to talk about tonight and getting out of the castle and helping Remus! And I was going to until I started to run after Lily.
