Chapter 1

Year: 2038

Kari sighed.

She leaned on her arm and looked out the second story window of her Remedial Math 2 or RM2, classroom from her table. She was alone at the two person table, so she had her messenger bag sitting in the seat beside her.

It was a fairly nice April day. No clouds were in sight. The deep blue sky seemed to go on forever. There was sparse amounts of snow covering the ground and some trees were even starting to sprout leaves. Kari had opened the window slightly to let in the warm breeze.

She had picked the spot closest to the window for two reasons. First was that she was alone at her two person table. At one point during the first week of class, Kari did recall a guy sitting beside her, but she never saw him after the first week. She assumed he dropped the course for whatever reason.

Secondly, because of the position of this table in the classroom, she could look out the window whenever she wanted. She really enjoyed that perk, especially on days like today, when the teacher was going on and on about whatever lesson.

And said teacher, Mr. Cole Schneider, was giving today's lecture on taxes and it was quite the long one.

"..This is very important for those few of you who will contribute to the American Economy." Kari rolled her eyes at his attempt to be humorous.

Sometimes, she thought his jokes were pretty lame. He was one of those teachers who tried to be 'cool' for the students. She honestly didn't like that about him.

'Teachers aren't paid to be my friend, they are paid to teach.'

Still, the other times Schneider joked around, he actually made decent ones that made Kari laugh out loud.

He was in his mid thirties, so he wasn't too old and could relate to his students. He was a good teacher and his lectures, although boring at times, were easy to understand.

Something else Kari didn't like about him was that he was one of those teachers that believed all of his students would become something important. Kari always stopped listing to him when he brings this up in class.

Kari believed that some people were meant to be scum.

'That's just life.' She thought bitterly. 'Face facts Schneider, not everyone can be President.' She thought.

'Hell, most people can't even be good, let alone successful.'

She kept looking outside, trying not to think too much about her own morals. Failing at that, she frowned deeply.
