Chapter 42
Kari woke slowly.
"Seyram." She said quietly. Kari smiled despite herself.
She had had a baby with someone other than Zing.
Kari had to admit, whenever she had any thoughts about having kids, Zing was always right there. She sighed.
She had decided that she doesn't care who Seyram's father was. She would only focus on Seyram and taking care of her.
She sat up and stretched her sore muscles. "How long have I been asleep?" Her head still throbbed, but less so than before. She looked over at the carriage where Seyram was sleeping and noticed that it was empty.
Somehow Kari didn't get angry or wonder where her baby was. "It only makes sense... If I am sleeping for days then someone has to take care of Seyram. One of the nurses or even Marcus himself might have her. I'll go look."
She got up and saw some clothes fall to the floor. She took the clothes, a white tank top and brown shorts, and exchanged them for her hospital gown. She opened the door to her room and stepped out into an empty hallway.
"What?" Kari looked around. It was a hospital. She was in a hospital.
And she didn't see a single soul.
"Hello?"
She walked down the hallway. "Anyone here?" She called out for someone, anyone.
'Why is this place so empty? Where is everybody?'
She kept walking and she saw the child care unit. She had a feeling that she should go down there, so she did, albeit reluctantly.
The rooms were dark and they looked abandoned. Some of the rooms had flickering lights, but mostly they were dark. "Am I the only one here?" Kari hugged herself. Suddenly, Kari felt cold.
No way would Marcus abandon her. He thinks of her as a threat, a small one, but one nonetheless, so he wouldn't just up and leave her.
Not that it mattered though. Even if Marcus left her, she wouldn't be able to use her Magic. He had put a thin blue ankle bracelet on her left leg, and Kari tried to break through it, but it was impossible with her being weakened so much the last few weeks.
"Hell-" Kari saw a light in a room further down the hall. She went quickly towards it.
She opened the door and saw two kids playing. One was a girl, around 5, with pretty long dark hair and a white frilly dress. The other was a boy, around the same age, in blue shorts and red shirt. On his head he had messy dark hair and a beanie. His skin was a caramel brown color.
They both had the same black eyes. Only difference was the boy's were wide and wondering and the girl's were droopy and observing. Kari knew that they were Marcus's kids.
And she also knew something else.
"Seyram?" Kari looked at the girl. She looked right back in surprise.
"Mama!" The girl ran to Kari. She hugged Kari's leg.
Kari kneeled down and looked at the girl. It was undeniable, it was definitely Seyram.
"Aww, Seyram... You grew." Kari felt tears running down her face.
"Why are you crying Mama? What's wrong?" Seyram put her hands on Kari's cheeks.
"My God, you can talk too!" Kari said. "I feel like I've just missed your whole life! It's stupid I know, but you're so big!"
"It's okay Mama. It's only been a few days since we last saw each other." She said matter-of-factly.
