Chapter 20
"Breaking News: A Class At A Local High School Brutally Murdered, Is An NH Responsible? We have the report."
Kari nearly choked on her coffee. She was at her house sitting on her couch.
She had gotten Freddy to put up some protection Runes around her place, similar to what she had done at the warehouse.
Since there were so many of them, Kari decided to let some of the group stay at her place. Among them was Zing, who was currently sleeping on her lap.
"Oi, wake up!!" She nudged him until he woke.
"Hmm? What is it?" Zing said, rubbing his eyes. He hadn't properly slept in a few days, so Kari told him an hour ago that he should at least take a small nap. He happily obliged when she offered her lap for his pillow.
"Look!" She pointed towards the screen.
"Hello. I'm Tracy Williams. Our top story tonight is nothing short of horrifying. A local high school class was found murdered this afternoon. Police believe an NH is to blame. We go live to Darren Wade on the scene. Darren?"
The camera split screened to show a reporter standing outside the school lined with police tape. The caption on the bottom of the screen read, 'High School Class Murdered By NH Student'
"Yes, thank you Tracy. I am here at Sacred Heart East High School just hours after a horrific discovery was made. A warning to those at home, this report has graphic and disturbing images."
The screen flipped to a picture of Zing.
"That's-!" Kari shushed him.
"A normal school boy. An average student. An NH."
The scene flipped to pictures of a blood splattered floor. Kari recognized it as the auditorium stage.
The next picture was of a body lying on the ground. Although the face was fuzzed out, Kari could tell by the clipboard next to it that the body was Derrick.
"Zing Lee grew up here in Sacred Heart. He went to Thurgood Marshall Elementary and then to Ernest Hemingway Junior High. He came here, to S.H. East a few years back."
The pictures of the schools that Zing went to were all shown.
"Last year, according to his classmates and his teachers, he started to become troubled."
The screen then showed a picture of Kari.
"This coincided with the disappearance of his girlfriend Akariella Miller. She was found a few months back safe and sound."
The screen went back to the reporter standing in front of the school.
"Some say that the return of a loved one would bring nothing but joy, but not in this case."
The pictures of the bloody floor came up again, this time with more images of the various students dead on the ground.
"Some say he was not satisfied that the person who kidnapped Akariella was not found. Some believe that Akariella broke up with him. Others say it's because he's an NH that he is inclined to kill. No one really knows what set Zing off. All we really know is, that he killed his Musical Theater class and is still on the run, Tracy?"
The screen went back to the news anchor.
"Thank you Darren. That was Darren Wade reporting from Sacred Heart East. Now, I want to bring in a panel to discuss this issue. This is not only happening here, but around the world. What can we do about NH's?"
Kari turned off the TV. She looked at Zing and saw that he had an angry look on his face.
"They are really trying hard to make us look evil. How did they even know what I was?" Zing said. "They don't even care that they are killing innocents. It probably doesn't even register for them."
"That's why we have to stop them as soon as possible." Kari said.
"What are my parents going to think? They're probably already worried sick about me, and now their only son was just proclaimed a murderer on TV!" Zing shook his head.
"They won't believe that. Reporters always lie about everything. You are their child and they know who you are. And you're not a murderer, that's for sure."
"But that's just it! They don't know who I am! They didn't know about me. They didn't know I'm not human."
"That doesn't matter-" Kari stopped when she saw Billy walk in.
"Oh, am I interrupting..?" Billy said.
"Actually, yes. What is it?" Kari asked.
"Um, Cam says he found one of the buildings where the Hunters set up shop." Billy said.
"Whoa! How'd he do that?" Zing said.
"That Hunter that you insisted we keep gave Cam a secret websites address that the Hunters use often. At first, he couldn't figure out what the guy gave him but then he spent a lot of time looking at it in different ways. How the enemy thinks and all that. It took him a while but he's figure it out! He says that the building has a lot of computer data and if we get a hold of that, we could find a way to defeat them quickly."
"Where is this place?" Kari asked.
"Not far from here, a few miles." Billy said. "Cam says that he only needs a few of us to come. Milo, Anya and I will go-"
"Why you? You can't do shit." Kari said.
Billy crossed his arms and frowned. "If the Hunters find out that we're there, I can slow Time down enough for Cam to finish downloading or whatever."
"Oh, okay. I'll come too." Kari said. Zing opened his mouth. Kari looked at him. "You will stay here. You are way too tired to help anyone." Zing slumped his shoulders.
"Okay then! Lets go kick some ass." Billy said.
"Where is Cam?" Kari said standing up.
"At HQ. That's what we call the warehouse now. Cool right? It's all spy-y." Billy said walking towards the front room.
Kari kissed Zing. "Stay safe." He said. She smiled.
"I will." She got up and left with Billy.
Unaware what was about to happen.
