"Where did he tell us to meet him?" Alec checked his phone that hadn't had service for the last two miles that they had wandered.
"He said to meet him in the park." Magnus shrugged.
"But Central Park is huge." Alec shook his head. "Why didn't you ask him to be more specific?"
"It was Jace. He gave his command and hung up." Magnus rolled his eyes.
"Sounds like Jace." Alec chuckled. "You should have seen it before Clary."
"Wait," Magnus grabbed Alec's shoulder to stop him, "he was worse than this? How is that even possible."
"I didn't say it was a bad thing." Alec covered Magnus's hand with his own and then resumed walking while holding onto Magnus's hand.
"I did." Magnus smiled at Alec's annoyed look. "What? He's annoying. He always pops in unannounced and tells us what to do without even a simple hello."
"He's efficient. Not all of us need to discuss our lives before we get to the point of the call." Alec said.
"Is this about when I called you at work?" Magnus smiled and turned to look at Alec.
"Maybe." Alec blushed and stepped closer.
"Finally! It took you love birds long enough." Jace called out from up ahead by a big tree.
Magnus growled and gave Jace a look that would have killed anyone with less of an ego. "See what I mean about him interrupting?"
"We came here to help him remember?" Alec patted Magnus on the chest. "We can continue this conversation at home."
"Fine." Magnus turned back to Jace. "So, what do you and the biscuit need help with this time, Jake?"
"Jace." Jace rolled his eyes. He should just give up. If he didn't keep correcting him Magnus would probably stop.
"Right Jace and Jake." Magnus tapped his chin. "I keep forgetting."
"Dick." Jace glared.
"Why yes, I'd love some," Magnus smirked then gave his boyfriend a pointed look and Alec died.
"Nice one!" Izzy popped out from behind a tree and high-fived Magnus.
"Thanks." Magnus smiled down at her.
"Should we check on Alec?" Simon asked with a worried look. Alec was standing completely still except for the red that was growing to consume all of his skin.
"He'll be fine." Clary came out with her notebook in hand.
"Yes, now why are we here?" Magnus asked clasping his hands in front of his chest.
"We have a greater demon on the loose. He has something that we need to get back." Jace explained without giving a single detail away.
"Oh, thank you. That's as clear as mud." Magnus's words dripped with sarcasm.
Izzy rolled her eyes at Jace. "What my brother here is trying to say is that a greater demon stole a little girl from the Institute that we were caring for."
"What?!" Alec popped back alive. "There's a kid missing and you let us waste time getting here!"
"Calm down darling." Magnus touched his cheek. "They have more to tell us about the girl."
"Magnus is right. The girl is a warlock; a damn powerful one." Jace said.
"Yeah, and she has gills." Simon piped in.
"That's her warlock mark," Magnus said. "Why was she in the institute? You people tend to not like my kind that close to you."
"She was in a breeding house that a warlock was running. We've been working on getting the kids homes. She was the last one." Clary said and looked down at her hands. "I tried to stop him."
"Why didn't you tell us right when it happened?" Alec demanded.
"We had it under control and you two were dealing with your own mission," Jace said and pulled out a map. "We know they're somewhere around here."
"Then what are we waiting for?" Alec pulled out his bow and arrow.
"Wait. Who is the greater demon?" Magnus asked.
"Not sure yet." Izzy shrugged. "I got some of his blood but the results didn't help."
"We need to be smart about this." Magnus declared.
"Why else do you think we called you?" Jace raised his eyebrows.
"Because you know we're actually smart." Magnus wiggled his eyebrows. "One day maybe you can be too."
"Magnus you can insult Jace later. Right now we need to find the little girl." Alec commanded. "What's her name?"
"We don't know. She hasn't spoken. We're not even sure she can." Clary said.
Kaboom!
They all looked towards the sound and inhaled sharply.
"I'm guessing the demon is that way." Simon said and laughed at his own joke.
"We'll go in teams and flank him." Alec said and motioned with his head to Jace. "You and Clary go to the left, Izzy and the vampire go to the right. Magnus go behind him and I'll walk straight to him. Once I shoot the first arrow attack."
"I don't like this idea." Magnus said.
"I can handle myself."Alec touched his cheek and lowered his voice. "I love you, now scoot." Alec, in a rare act of bravery, slapped Magnus's butt.
The others glanced at each other but no one said anything. They dispersed and Alec waited a full minute before walking towards the cloud of black smoke.
