"You messed up," Tony stated as he waltzed through Steve's studio and slid into the chair across the blonde.
"Thanks for pointing that out, I didn't know that," Steve said sourly. He had just been back a few days and the prying eyes of the media kept following him everywhere. Chasing him for answers on why Natasha has not been seen around with him, but mostly they wanted to know who the mystery brunette was. "Guess who's that girl?" had pretty much be trending everywhere.
"Look at you, all sarcastic when heartbroken," Tony responded, with a disappointed look and Steve knew he's probably here to tell him news about Nat.
"How's she?" Steve asked with his hands propped on the desk, dropping the pencil from his grip, focusing entirely to what Tony's about to say.
"Surprisingly well," and Steve didn't know whether to feel upset or happy about it, "I thought she'd be sulking and weepy about it. Isn't that what you do when you break up?"
Steve gave him a 'seriously?' look and Tony replied, "Never been through one."
Steve nodded slowly and at that moment he felt jealous of Tony. Jealous of how he's not feeling all the pain and all the sorrow of one breakup, how he could live on through his days without being lost in a thought, in a memory of being with someone who just makes you smile no matter what the circumstance, someone who you love no matter what they did. He wished he could be happy. He knows he won't as long as she's not around anymore.
"How 'bout you, Spangles?" a nickname Steve acquired after long years of friendship with Tony, "How you holding up?" Tony said as he leaned back in his chair and took off his sunglasses, exhaling in content as he found a comfortable position on his chair.
"I've been better," he admitted, although not enough to express the sadness he's going through. Tony felt it was too soon to push him for more so he nodded and leaned back further more.
"You know what? I know just what you need," the billionaire spoke up like he just came up with a groundbreaking idea, he is a genius after all.
Before the billionaire even spoke up, Steve had already mentally listed all the crazy things Tony could've possibly suggest him, quick to respond, Steve instantly said, "No."
"I haven't said anything," Tony protested.
"If you did, I'd say no anyways," Steve rejected him once more.
"Why are you against fun?" Tony quipped in annoyance.
"Your definition of fun might include some crazy things I don't wanna be a part of. Again," Yes, again. It's not the first time Tony offered him a brilliant idea of his, and they've been friends for far too long for him to realize that Tony's ideas might invite trouble.
"It's nothing like the past things we did, Steve. Just a new year's party," Tony said and though he said 'just', Steve believes it's gonna be extravagant as ever. Nobody throws a better party than Tony Stark.
Steve sighed and considered the idea, "Come on man, loosen up a little. It's still next month anyways," Tony persuaded.
"What if- Will... she be there?" Steve asked hesitantly.
"She will, she lost a bet against me," Tony replied and Steve's expression faltered. If she's there, he's not sure he can even be in the same room with her without taking her in his arms and hold her close. What if she brought another man? He can't. Just the thought of it makes him fidget in anxiety.
"I'll consider it," Steve finally said and Tony stood up and fixed the button of his suit, grabbing his sunglasses and then walking out.
"Best party of the year, I can guarantee," Tony assured and when Steve didn't reply he said, "Just, be there."
