"...then one day you realize that your entire life is just awful, not worth living, a horror and a black blot on the white terrain of human existence. One morning you wake up afraid you are going to live."

"So, what's his condition?" Luna asked, nervously twirling a string of her hair around her index finger.

It was the question that I had no courage to learn the answer to.

I'd refused to leave the hospital until I found out what was going on with Tyler. In all honesty, I just wanted one final answer, so I would finally have closure.

I was also too scared of the final answer. Tyler was either gonna live, or he was gonna die. I knew quite a lot about comas since I'd been in one, and if there was one thing I learned, it was that they were unpredictable.

Tyler's coma hadn't been medically induced, so the doctors didn't know what condition he had been in beforehand. All they could do was monitor him, take care of his comatose body, and pray to God that he regained consciousness. The rest was up to Tyler.

Finally, Ms. Joseph sighed, the bags under her eyes dark and prominent. "He still has brain activity, but the neurologists in ICU said that the fact that his EET practically flatlined wasn't good. He's in induced hypothermia right now."

"Induced hypothermia?" I repeated, making sure I heard her right. Why the hell would they give him hypothermia?

"Yeah. If he has a chance of living, it should be increased by lowering his body temperature. Doing so minimizes any brain swelling."

"Oh."

I didn't know what else to say, so I thought of Ms. Joseph's words, feeling just as helpless as before.

'If he has a chance of living.'

Hope was a scary thing to have.
