Be careful.
The two sinister words repeated in my mind. I reread the note several times, making sure I wasn't delusional.
Be careful. The note had to be from Tyler. He'd said the same thing right before he kissed me.
The only question was, why was the signature '-B'?
I didn't understand that part. My brain refused to grasp at any sort of hidden meaning, which left me stumped. I re-folded the sheet of paper and tucked it into my back pocket with trembling hands, rubbing my face tiredly.
My mind was whirring. I didn't know what the hell was going on anymore, so I decided to stop thinking about it. If I was gone much longer, my friends would notice that I was missing, so I picked out the pills I needed and put them in my other pocket.
I stepped out of my room and closed my door again. As I turned around to walk down the hall, I noticed that the light had burnt out.
"Damnit," I muttered under my breath, wondering how many spare lightbulbs we had packed away somewhere in the garage. Three?
All of a sudden, as I turned the corner to make my way down the stairs, I smacked straight into somebody. They grabbed both my wrists and pulled me back around the corner, back into the darkness. A wave of bright-red washed over me, but just like that, it was gone again.
My eyes were wide, and I felt my heart pound inside my chest as I realized who it was that had grabbed me. I could recognize that soft, woodsy smell from anywhere.
"Tyler?" I asked meekly, my voice a tiny whisper.
He put a finger up to my lips, hushing me. The small action made my heartbeat weaver for a moment, and I tried my hardest not to start trembling.
Breathe in, breathe out.
As my eyes re-adjusted to the darkness, I watched Tyler glance around anxiously, as if we were playing a life-or-death game of hide-and-seek.
Finally, he returned his gaze to me and released my wrists. I rubbed them, still feeling the subtle warmth of where Tyler's hand had been.
"Jenna," he said quietly. I wished I could shrink away, but my back was already pressed against the wall. I had nowhere to go, and I felt like I was about to fall apart.
"W- what," I stuttered, clamping a hand over my mouth after I realized that I'd been too loud.
Tyler looked even more worried, taking frequent glances around the corner. "Did you take your pills?" he asked suddenly, and I almost wanted to laugh.
He trapped me in a dark hallway just to ask me if I took my pills?
"I think we have more important things to talk about than that," I mumbled bitterly, only half-joking.
This didn't seem to amuse Tyler. He spoke again, but in a colder, more serious voice this time. It chilled me to the core.
"I'm serious Jenna. Did you take your pills?"
I chewed on the inside of my cheek, trying to stop my trembling. "No, but I was about to. I just grabbed them, and I was gonna take them downst-"
His shoulders visibly sagged with my answer, and he cut me off. "Good. Now give me them."
I frowned at Tyler's command. "Give you my pills? Why?"
He tangled his fingers in his hair in frustration. "You trust me, right Jenna?"
