Madeline's POV- June 2017

The team had made it to the Championship series of the Women's College World Series and we had just played the first game. Kelly got an RBI on a single last night to start off the game during the fourth inning. Unfortunately the opposing team scored runs in the fifth and sixth inning. Erin hit a double which brought Kelly in for the tying run. Most softball game end after the seventh inning, but since the game was tied it went into overtime. They untied the game at the top of the twelfth with a two run homer, and luckily we were able to tie the game during the bottom of the twelfth. We weren't able to bounce back after a three run homer in the seventeenth inning. The game ended 7-5, in Oklahoma's favor. I wanted to shower and head back to the hotel, unfortunately that was not happening anytime soon. It was press conference time, so that meant I was sleeping in a bit tomorrow. Erin had closed tonights game, and was starting tomorrows game she was headed back to the hotel with the girls. Coach was currently speaking about how well both teams had played, and that he was so proud of us.

"My question is for Madeline"

I reached for my water bottle as I waited for the question.

"How does your elbow feel?"

I smiled.

"A little bruised, but I'll be alright" I assured them.

I took a ball to the elbow and it hurt like a ...you get me.

"You and Sophia played together back in high school, how does it feel to play against her?"

This was a question I knew I was going to get asked the minute I learned we would be playing OU.

"I had the pleasure to play with Soph my senior year of high school when she was a freshmen, and I'm so proud to see how much she has grown as not only as a person but as a pitcher" I answered.

Soph was in her second year at Oklahoma. She already had a National Title under her belt. I honestly thought it was cool that we were facing them since we were the two teams that had won National titles in the past four years.

"You were named to the National Team"

"I was" I confirmed.

I took a sip of my water.

"You also start Grad School in September"

I nodded as I set my now closed water bottle on the table.

"How do you plan on balancing that?"

I smiled.

"I actually turned down the offer to play for the National team" I replied.

The room got incredibly quiet. I was on roster predictions for the 2020 Olympics as my old teammates' back up, but I made my decision before it was voted on to make Softball and Olympic sport again.

"If it weren't for this program I would have never had the opportunity to be a part of the National Team. My career started as a Gator, and it will end as a Gator" I explained.

It was a hard decision, especially after learning that Softball would be returning as an Olympic sport in 2020. As a kid, I dreamed of winning Olympic gold. That changed in 2007 when I learned that it would no longer be an Olympic sport. I 'discovered' NCAA softball that year, and that became my goal. If I couldn't go to the Olympics and compete for a medal, I'd play Division I softball and win a National Title instead.

"That's enough questions for Maddy"

I leaned back and listened to my teammates answer the questions they were asked.

"Oklahoma won it last year, and you guys won it the two years before that"

Coach nodded as he waited for the question to come.

"That is correct"

I shifted a bit as I felt my phone vibrating under my leg where it currently was.

"Thank you coach, thank you ladies"

I stood up and placed my phone in my pocket. Once I grabbed my water bottle, I followed the girls out of the room and towards the car that was waiting to take us back to the hotel. Just as we got to the hotel, Coach cleared his throat.

"Maddy, rest up. You're starting tomorrow"

I nodded and walked into the elevator.

"Good night" I said once we were on our floor.

"Night"

I swiped my key and yawned as I opened the door.

"Shower and we can talk for a bit"

I did as told and got my PJs before making my way to the bathroom where I took a warm shower.

"Today sucked"

"Yes it did" I replied agreeing.

I crawled into bed and just as Erin lied down my phone started ringing.

"Who's calling this late?"

"Auston" I informed her as I sat up.

She scrunched up her nose as she frowned.

"Be nice" I told her.

Rolling her eyes she shifted on her side.

"Hey Auston" I greeted after I answered the call.

"Hey, I just saw the score"

"You didn't catch the game?" I asked.

"I was out with a few friends"

I nodded slowly and put the call on speaker as I got a text.

"He was probably out with the girl who answered his phone the other time"

Leave it to Erin to say that.

"I can explain"

"You don't need to, you're allowed to see other people" I said.

I shrugged.

"It's ok" I assured him.

"Are you seeing other people?"

Before I could reply, my phone was being take off my hands.

"And if she is, why do you care?"

I accepted my phone back and placed it against my ear as I took it off speaker.

"Remember I told you mom was trying to set me up with someone" I mentioned.

He stayed quiet.

"She gave me his phone number, and we've been talking" I informed him.

"Just talking?"

I raised an eyebrow.

"Yeah" I answered.

I bit my lip as he hummed.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Cause you get so jealous" I stated.

"Is there a reason for me to be jealous?"

I rolled my eyes.

"I'm allowed to have guy friends" I argued.

"He wants to be more than that"

I raised an eyebrow.

"We're not dating Auston, and I'm kind of thankful were not at the moment" I admitted.

"Why's that?"

"Because you're acting like you own me" I replied.

He stayed quiet.

"I'm having a really shitty day, I don't have time to care about you being jealous" I informed him.

Just like that, I ended the call. If he wanted to act like a child then I was going to treat him like one. I could speak to anyone I wanted to.
