Thirty One

Madeline's POV- June 2017

I smiled as Poppy rubbed himself against my legs while he waited for me to feed him.

"Maddy, honey; where are you?"

"In the kitchen" I called out as I poured some kitten kibble into Poppy's food bowl. 

Just as I set the bowl on the floor, I heard a throat clear.

"You look nice"

"Thank you" I said to Noah who walked into the kitchen.

"Where are you and mom going again?"

"The LA Dodgers Gala" I answered.

I had not heard from Auston since I had snapped at him. A lot had happened since then, like losing Game 2. Oklahoma started off with a homer, and it took us two innings to tie the game. Not only did we tie the game during the second inning, but we scored two other runs. The pressure got one of our pitchers which led her to walk a girl. That small error caused a lot of the girls to begin to freak out. We had a fairly young team (most of the girls had just finished their sophomore year) who had not been in this position. Another error that occurred in center field caused three runs to be scored on a double. Coach pulled me out of the game and told me to warm Erin up. He replaced me at first, and told Kelly he was pulling her out once Erin was warmed up. Once Erin was warmed up, coach put Kelly as a pinch hitter. She hit a homer, but we were unable to tie the game. I was used to exit interviews, but it honestly sucked to see most of the girls being interviewed with red eyes and noses. As the oldest team member I was in charge of giving them pep talks, which did not make goodbyes hard. I was very thankful this morning to see my eyes were not blood shot.

"Will you be back late?"

I glanced up as mom walked into the kitchen.

"Honey, let's go or we will be late"

I nodded and turned to Noah.

"Give me a hug" I told him.

He smiled and stepped forward so that I could hug him. Once he was in my embrace I looked down at him.

"Leave Poppy alone, don't think I didn't see the scratches you and Nate have on your arms" I informed him.

"Your cat doesn't like me"

"He will grow to like you, give it time" I said.

I kissed his cheek and let go of him.

"Have fun, take a picture with Adam Levine"

Oh I was going to.

"Don't eat too much pizza" I replied back.

I followed mom out of the kitchen and reached for my wrist clutch that was on the couch.

"No feeding Poppy" I warned Mike and Nate who looked away from the TV.

"You look pretty Maddy"

I smiled at Nate as mom hummed.

"You always look pretty mom"

Mom nodded as she placed her hand on my back.

"Expect us back late, both of you in bed before 10PM"

She looked at Mike who nodded.

"Have fun"

Once we were inside the car, mom turned to me and smiled.

"I love your dress"

"Thank you, I wore it to the team dinner" I told her.
