maybe obstacles were a good thing?
an unfortunate barrier that would make or break you depending on the choices you decided to make, and so help you if you chose the wrong option.
the erratical situations could be randomly thrown at you whether it was good or bad, and you're expected to make it out with your head held high and a smile on your face... but how could someone be perfectly fine after something unplanned is sprung on you out of nowhere?
not everybody could get what they wanted, they could dream about achieving the goals they had in life and they could even accomplish them, but how are you supposed to win when the one person you're utterly in love with, looks at you like you're just a friend and all you want to achieve in life is to hold that persons hand and tell them you love them more than a friend?
pity isn't exactly the term you would want to hear, but maybe the word hopeless would fit just fine.
