pt. 5/5

two young boys sat underneath the large oak trees with their backs pressed against the bark, and their small lips a mix of colors from the ice cream their mothers bought them from the ice cream truck. their eyes had been watching the waves of the water in the canal along the grassy area of the park in silence.

"joshie?" one of the small brunets said with a quiet shy tone. his voice never one to raise in pitch, but quiet down into a mere whisper.

"yes ty?" the other small brunet answered back. his ice cream was held away from his mouth as he turned to look at the boy next to him with his large puppy dog eyes holding innocence.

the smaller of the two open and closed his mouth as he thought of how to word his next question. his eyebrows were furrowed as his cheeks turned red in embarrassment. he let out a frustrated huff before shaking his head and staring intently at his melting treat that began to gather along the edge of the cone.

josh smiled his cute little grin and patted his best friend on the shoulder before scooting closer. "it's okay ty. you don't have to rush yourself!" he said encouragingly, knowing that sometimes the other boy had a hard time with getting out his words.

"d-don't get mad at me." tyler whispered timidly. his voice on the verge of a whimper as he looked over at josh with his doe eyes wide and glistening.

the older boy frowned and shook his head. "i won't. don't be scared ty-ty. i promise not to get mad at you." he reassured the other.

"promise?" tyler asked.

"promise." josh responded.

taking in another breath and licking up the melting treat that almost fell onto his bare hand, tyler sighed once.

"do you think we'll be best friend forever?" the small brunet asked so low it was almost not picked up by the boy besides him.

josh giggled and kisses tyler's cheek. this caused him to giggle even more when he saw the blush that coated the other boys cheeks.

"we're gonna be married tyler! of course we're going to be friends forever!" josh said. his tone so confident and sure that tyler joined in on the giggling.

the two boys sat silently under the oak tree, finishing their treats while their parents sat at the bench close by. eventually when they both finished their ice creams, they continued to watch the water. eyes now training on the trail of duckling that were swimming after their mother.

neither one of them knowing the hardships they would pass as adults.

two boys; both broken.
