SLADE

It can't be true. It can't be! How's this possible? I paced back and forth in front of the fireplace. My hands were shaking badly which pissed me off even more. She can't be alive! Alexi died, I saw her die. It was the last time, we lost her for good then. It can't be.

“It is,” Fury muttered from the doorway.

I span around, clenching my fists as our eyes locked. “Get out of my head!”

“I'm not in your head. You've been muttering that out loud,” he said softly.

His head tilted to the side as he stared at me. A few minutes of silence passed as we stared at each other. I took the time to study my brother. He didn't look surprised about it. In fact, he looked really fucking happy. How the hell can he be happy at a time like this?

“You met her before I did,” he said, stepping further into the room. “Couldn't you tell that she was our mate the first time you met her?”

I clenched my jaw then turned away from him. Of course I knew it. The sparks I felt when we touched indicated that she was our mate. But I never thought of her as Lexi. She died and I had accepted it and now she's back.

“I thought we had a second chance,” I whispered. “We both were there when Lexi died. She's suppose to be dead Fury!”

“But she's not! She's alive! We have a chance to do things right this time. Things could be different.”

“Different how?” I yelled, spinning around to face him. “We're going to spend most of our time fearing for her life! We'll be looking for her killer, take every possible fucking precaution we can, and you know what? She's still going to die! She's always going to fucking because we can never save her! We always fail her and that's what hurts Fury!” My voice cracked. “It fucking hurts watching her die and then not knowing if we'll meet her again. I can't do this again Fury.”

Without warning he pulled me in for a hug. I wrapped my arms around his waist as I pulled him closer. I couldn't handle the insecurities of it again. Having to wonder every time is she's going to come back. How was she going to die this time? Would it be an accident or would she die in our arms? It was different every time.

“Not this time.” Fury pulled back and placed his hands on my shoulders. “This time we won't lose her. We know what to expect-”

“We don't!” I stepped away from him. “The car accident-”

Fury had tensed making my words die down. He turned slightly making me follow his gaze towards the doorway. His hearing was better than mine because of his hybrid blood. Sometimes I hated the fact that he was stronger than me, but then I remembered how he was turned. My brother hated himself for what he was, nothing would be able to turn him back.

I focused on the sounds around us. Alexi was cautiously making her way down the stairs. My ears picked up the sound of keys jiggling. Then it was silent again. She was leaving. It's the best thing she could do. She's human, she doesn't need us. Alexi doesn't belong in our world that's the reason she always dies.

Before I could grip Fury's arm, he was already using his speed to stop her. I groaned, following him out of the room. Not even a second later I heard her scream. I stepped out into the hall taking in the scene in front of me. Fury was standing in front of her with his lips pulled back in a sneer. His fangs were on full display and that's what scared her. Her next action surprised me, Lexi dropped her bag running over to me. I tensed as she wrapped her arms around my waist and pressed her face against my chest. My eyes widened in surprise before darting over her head to my brother. He smirked.

“He's not going to hurt you baby,” I whispered, wrapping my arms around her small frame.

My eyes dropped to the top of her head as she hugged me closer. I sucked in a breath. She smelled so fucking good. She smelled like home. Pain flashed through my chest. We're going to lose her again, I knew it. Lexi pulled back, lifting her head to stare at me. Our eyes locked and a shockwave flashed through me again, just like the first time we met.

“Mate,” my wolf cried in my head. “Mark mate.”

He was closer to the surface than he usually was. He was fighting for control. Forcing me into the back of my mind so he could take control. He wanted to meet his mate again. Mark her. Taste her.

“Slade,” Fury stepped forward.

It was too late, he had already took control. All I could do was watch from the back of my mind as he leaned forward. His nose trailed along her neck, breathing in her scent. My wolf growled as he pulled her closer to us. Her body was pressed tightly against ours.

“S-Slade?”

His teeth lengthened.

No!

They scraped along the flesh of her neck down to the place where she would wear our mark.

“Fury!” I screamed at him through our mind-link.

We can't mark her. I can't mark her. Her body was ripped from mine making the beast angry. Low growls fell from our lips as we stared at them. Fury stood in front of Lexi, he was ready to fight.

“Don't. Go for a run until you both calm down brother. You know better than to let your emotions take control.”

He was right. Our human side and our animal side were one. The only way for them to force control, was when the human side was very emotional. The brain becomes weak because of the emotion therefore he could take control. With one last glance at them, I stormed out of the house and towards the woods at the back of the house. Stopping by the treeline, I glanced back at the house.

Lexi can't stay here. She needed to leave.
