I was stuck in a trance of shock as the ambulance soon arrived and started checking for Alex's heartbeat as they loaded him into the Ambulance. People had created a circle around us, beholding the scene before them. Kids pointed at him and asked what was happening while their parents shook their heads in pity. Steph was by me side as they strapped Alex down and taped an oxygen mask over his face in the presence of Seth.
'Go with him in the ambulance...me and Seth will follow from behind in the car,' Steph comforted me as I pulled myself into the ambulance and sat on the seat at the side. I took Alex's hand in mine and looked at his beautiful face set in a slight frown. Beads of perspiration were accumalating on his forehead as we started nearing the hospital. My throat was dry as I gripped his hand tighter and knew I had to be strong. Not just for me. For him. Wiping a tear that managed to slip out I looked at a young nurse checking his heartbeat and the panic in her demeanour.
'Do you have any recent medical history of this young man?' she questioned in a rushed tone as I cleared my throat trying my best to not sound weak and get the right words out.
'Yes,' I croaked, taking a small breath before the next few words, 'He has cancer.'
She seemed stunned for a second then a look of realisation hit her face as I expect she matched the symptoms with the situation.
'I'm sorry to hear that, don't worry we are doing our best...the hospital is not far off now...' she explained unsurely avoiding my eyes, which only made me want to cry harder. It was as if I had become numb to everything that surrounded me as we approached the hospital. A sick feeling crept up my throat as I watched the hospital getting closer in the distance. The feeling of nausea would not go away even as Alex was unloaded of the vehicle and approached by more doctors to be brought into the hospital. The woman gave me one last apolagizing look before Steph arrived and dragged me inside, leaving her behind in the distance.
'Seth stay with her, I'll go find out what's going on.' Steph instructed with a strange finality in her words. Seth simply nodded as she left to chase after the doctors who had taken Alex. My head was tilted downwards as Seth guided me to a chair and sat me down like a drone. I focused on my feet and every little detail on the washed out floor, trying to divert my attention. Memories of Alex flooded through my mind. From the moment he had slaughtered my Porshe to the time we spent together in the park. I had a strange feeling inside me where I didn't want to smile and I didn't want to cry. I just wanted to crawl up in a corner and be left alone. Isolated from the rest of the world.
'Anster,' I heard Seth's voice calling out to me in the distance even though he was right next to me. Every sound was faded around me as I began to lose myself in my thoughts. The smell of antiseptic crept up my nose like a pungent stench and the memories in my mind became stronger as I drifted away to a place where things were different.

'Ani please wake up, he's ok...he's going to be ok...please...come back to me,' a voice was pleading in the distance and my eyes rolled beneath my eyelids. I couldn't see anything. I was so confused as to where I was and what was happening. Realising my eyes were closed bought a slight relief to my mind and I concentrated on opening them. After the weakness had ceased a little I managed to open my eyes slowly, blinking due to the bright light the doctor was shining in my face.
'She's awake,' a familiar face was reassuring Seth who was sitting beside me while Steph just burst in through the door. At that statement Steph rushed towards me and Seth let out a breath he had been holding for a long time.Tears formed in both their eyes and eye bags were visible. Seth had extremely messy hair, probably from the amount of times he had run his hands through them and it was as if his face was set in a permanent frown from the many wrinkles etched into his forehead. The doctor took the light away thankfully as my eyes adjusted to the dim light in the room. I finally took the time to absorb my surroundings and everything that had happened came crashing down onto me. Immediately I began to get up and felt light-headed in the process.
