The drive home was quick and almost unnoticable as I was busy peering out of the window at the passing concrete buildings. My thoughts were lost as I watched the light pitter patter of rain on the glass windows. It had started drizzling as soon as I had left the hospital and I had rushed for the cab to avoid getting wet. It would have been bad for me to get sick...now that I was carrying someone else inside of me. Making sure the driver wasn't looking I nimbly touched my stomach and waited for something to happen. I knew I was being stupid, it hasn't been long so there is no way the baby would start kicking already. Still it was frightening to imagine something growing inside me. Turning me attention back to the window I noticed we had fast approached my house. Now I was scared out of my mind. It had been a long time since I had contacted or even seen my parents for that matter! The only reason they probably hadn't called the police or a search party was because Seth was keeping them sane.
Reluctantly, I dragged my feet out of the vehicle and handed a $20 bill to the cab driver who snatched it out of my hand and drove away before I even had the chance to close the door properly. I stuck my tongue out at the sight of his retreating car and crossed my arms in distate. Alright...now...how in the world was I going to explain to my parents what has been happening. My dad would definitely slaughter me while my mother would stand there recording the scene with her favourite camcorder. Biting my lip nervously I took a deep breath and edged towards the door. The bell rang once...twice and then the door flung open as I now stood facing my startled mother. Oh crap.
'Hey mum...how you doing?' I awkwardly laughed out through my teeth as her face went through a medley of emotions. It switched from surprise...to worry to pure, unadulterated anger. We stood just staring at eachother (well glaring from her side) for what seemed like an eternity until a voice boomed from behind her.
'What's wrong who's at the the door?' my dads gruff voice asked as if he hadn't slept in days. I gulped. Crap, crappity crap crap! Now I was really in for it. My mums expressioned softened ever so slightly as she opened the door barely for me to step inside and face my dads wrath myself. That betrayer. I wiped my shoes at the door and took the off gingerly, doing whatever I could to increase the time I had before facing my parents. The door clicked shut behind me as my mother stood with crossed arms waiting for me to head first into the dungeon of doom. I gave her small smile which she did not return and walked through the doorway into the familiar hall. My dads back was towards me as he read todays newspaper. He was sitting like he normally did one leg on the floor and the other resting above it in his favourite comfy sofa chair. His gaze slowly turned around like in those horror movies before some cute little kid dies a horrible death. His face wore an emotionless mask as I saw the bags under his eyes and dishevelled experience. This was not good.
Neither of us said a word, daring the other to speak as I could just feel the daggers my mum was giving me pierce through my back. Putting his newspaper down he gradually got up from his seat and paced around it till he stood directly in front of me. The look on his face made me cower back ever so slightly and for the first time in my life I felt scared shitless of my 'lovable' daddy.
'I'm pregnant, I'm sorry I can expl-' THWACK! I was shocked as my face turned sharply to the right and I heard a startling gasp from behind me. The echo travelled up the walls and back down again as I gulped and stayed in the same position not daring to move as tears stung my eyes. Silence resounded in the room and no one dared to move. Suppressing my tears I turned my head back straight and faced the floor letting my eyes slowly travel up to my dads angry, hurt and most of all torn face. His disgust for what he had done and what I had made him do was clear and he stumbled backwards and fell back in his chair. Ignoring the stinging on my cheek and looked up towards him and opened my mouth to speak but no words came out. The physical pain he had caused me would diappear in a few hours but the internal pain I had given him would take much longer to heal.
