and in the midst of all that was a seventeen year old miles. or, as he liked everyone even at school call him, baby. or is that what his boss called him? he honestly didn't remember who gave him that name, but it had been his name since he could remember.

he wasn't your avarage teenage boy, as you would expect the sentence to start. he was quite irregular.

for a first, baby had tinnitus. he got it when his parents and him crashed into a large truck in front of them. the adults were fighting and didn't pay attention to where the car was going.

because of that, he has to have headphones in his ear and music blasting through them at all times. music as an obligation to hear correctly? any music maniac would love that.

second of all, he didn't speak as much as every other peer of his did. baby was just enjoying music all the time, buying coffee, studying, taking care of his adoptive dad and watching other people at his school. he didn't need much talking to do, he just listened.

third of all, he was working as a driver. and it could be ten years now, baby had lost count of the years he was working for his boss. he was the only driver his boss had. and he was the best. boss could always count on baby and when he called, baby was there.

baby was sometimes scared of the clients. they were criminals, sometimes even killers. seeing what they did made him even more silent.

baby wasn't allowed to tell anyone about his clients, boss or job. it was completely secret, he feared to tell anyone about his job and then tell them "keep it a secret". it was that confidential.

it's not like baby didn't have anyone to tell. he had somehow made a group of friends. well, technically, he befriended one guy and then another and they had other friends and so they somehow became a group of friends.

his two best friends were called kaelin and jessie, but kaelin was more of a best friend than jessie, he had met him first and trusted him better. baby didn't care what his friends were like, actually. he knew they couldn't be worse than the people he drives around every other day.

"miles, young man, are you here with us?" baby distinctly heard his teacher speak. he straightened his back and looked at her, nodding. "so, what is it?"

"the cold war started right after world war two." baby said nonchalantly. the teacher nodded with a confused look on her face. well, she was new and couldn't quite get her head around the fact that a guy with headphones in his ears could hear what she said. or rather read the words of her lips, but she didn't know that.

"correct, miles." the teacher said. she also didn't know he prefered to be called baby. but it wouldn't be quite appropriate to call a student 'baby'. she then turned back around to face the board and baby leaned on his arms again, but he didn't quite finish. he felt a tap on his shoulder.

baby turned around only to see his friend jessie. "wanna hang out with me today? i've got a new girl." jessie whispered with a grin. baby never liked when jessie grinned, it meant that something was off. but he nodded. "alright, we'll just go to a diner. meet me at blue benn after school's over. take kaelin with you." jessie said. baby nodded again and turned back around to focus on the teacher.
