That Same Evening

Nia stands in front of JI, her arms folded and her face tight. 'Don't lie to me, Justin.' JI chuckles. 'I'm not.' She continues grimacing, sure that he's lying. 'Can you just tell me already?' He smirks, leaning back in his chair. 'Same thing that could be goin' on between us if you stop playin'.' He reaches for her hips but she slaps his hands away. 'Stop man. I'm not tryna go there with you.' 'Why?' he asks. She ignores him, pushing for an answer. 'Just tell me what's going on.'

He sucks his teeth, 'Nothin' man, they just cool.' 'He said she had a crush on him, that true?' JI shrugs. 'Guess so, I don't know, she never said nothin' to me.' She studies him, not fully believing him. I know he lyin'. 'I know he be cakin' in her live and leaving lil' bullshit comments on her pictures.' 'Damn girl,' JI says laughing. 'You a stalker now?' 'It's not stalkin', it's doing groundwork.' 'Stalkin'.'

She rolls her eyes. This is getting nowhere, I should've went to Key. 'Whatever, you got somethin' to tell me or nah?' He shakes his head. 'I told you, he good. She was talkin' to some dude before we left.' 'But she was just flirtin' with Mani.' JI shrugs, picking up his phone, playing in his hair. Okay, now I know he lyin'.

She grabs his phone, putting it in her back pocket. He's surprised at first but quickly smiles devilishly. 'You know that's not gon' stop me.' He reaches for it but she moves back. He reaches for her hand and pulls her onto him, trying to kiss her. 'Nah, chill man,' she says, trying to get up. He pulls her back, holding onto her tight. 'What, you don't want me kissin' on you now.' 'No' she says, flipping her hair in his face.

It annoys him and he flips it back at her. 'Why?' he asks. 'You know why,' she replies, anger growing in her tone. 'He up here lying to you and you steady tryna stay.' 'At least he not fucking other girls then tellin' me I'm the only one then flippin' it to we was never nothing.' JI tenses, starting to release his grip on her. She takes the opportunity to get up, sitting far from him. 'Why you always gotta bring that up?' he says through gritted teeth. 'Don't start and I won't.'

**

Nia lies outstretched on JI's bed, his room messy but not too cluttered. Her shirt is a little wrinkled now but she doesn't mind. She hears him in the hallway with his brother but she pays no mind to their conversation. Her phone dings and she grabs it, hoping it's not her ride. It isn't.

It's a DM from a girl. It reads: Next time you try to steal my man, at least have the decency to not throw yourself at him. You look thirsty, desert looking ass. Oh and tell my bae I said I'll be there around 6, I expect to see you and your dusty rags gone by then. Her hands start to shake as she rereads the message, the same meaning coming through each time.

'Justin!' she yells, her voice scarier than she expected. 'What,' he says coming back in the room. She throws her phone at him, not caring if he catches it or not. 'I'm so sick of this shit.' 'What?' he asks, truly confused. 'These stupid bitches Justin, you still fucking around on me?' He chuckles, 'Can't fuck around on you if we not together.' Her face breaks, his words piercing. 'What?' she asks hesitantly.

He glances at the phone, nodding at the message before tossing it back. 'I told you,' he starts. 'We not together. We just chillin', having fun or whatever.' 'Or whatever? I came all the way over here for you but we just 'chillin''?' He's unfazed by her outburst and it makes her angrier. 'Fuck you, Justin.' He shrugs, not paying her any attention as she runs out of his room, tears falling from her face.
