Chapter 12

JAI’S POV

I walked into our room to find Jess sitting on the floor, the look on her face. It wasn’t one I had seen before, it could only mean one thing. ‘I’ve just a few things to do before I jump into bed and same with Luke.’ Jess looked up, she nodded. She didn’t smile or really look at me then she went back to her own thoughts.

She was thinking about it, I could see that look in her eye. She was hurting. I walked out to Luke who was on his laptop. ‘What have we done?’ I said sitting down next to him.

‘What do you mean?’ Luke looked at me confused.

‘Go into your room, grab your phone. Take a quick look at Jess.’ Luke looked at me, confused. But he did as I said. He returned with a look of horror on his face. ‘Oh my god. What are we going to do?’ he asked sitting next to me.

‘I think I’ll let Jess sleep with me. I’ll sit up and watch her all night, I won’t let her leave and do it. Because it’s my fault.’ I frowned and looked around, ashamed at how I had made her feel. Luke patted me on the back.

‘Wake me up if you need help.’ I nodded and headed off to our room. Luke turned off his laptop and followed me. Jess had that same, lost look on her face. I cringed, I had done that, me! I grabbed her hand and she stood up. I gave her a hug and she rested her head on my shoulder. ‘I’m sorry’ I said into her ear. Jess looked at me, confused. Then she rested her head back on my shoulder. I stroked her silky hair. ‘I’m sorry that I made them comeback. And I know that tonight is going to be hard, but I’m going to help. We can do this,’ Jess looked at me.

‘Thanks, I’m going to make it. I’m not going to give up today, not ever.’ I jumped into bed, I sat leaning against the wall. Jess rested her head on my chest. Luke walked in nodded and turned off the light before climbing onto the top bunk. I placed my hand on her back, ‘you can do this.’ I whispered into her ear. She smiled and I felt her relax, she started to drift off to sleep. I was going to watch her, I knew I would fall asleep eventually, but I think we were safe.

-the next day-

LUKE’S POV

I woke Jess and Jai up, it was 7:30 and we needed to get ready for school. It was cute, Jai was sitting there, Jess’s head was resting on his chest. Their breathing was perfectly in sync. I quietly woke up Jai, he got out of bed, leaving Jess fast asleep. We walked into the kitchen and started making breakfast. ‘Are we safe?’ I asked Jai, he looked tired. ‘Yeah, I think so,’ he smiled, ‘I fell asleep pretty soon after she did, but I think we’re good.’ I could see the relief on his face.

We at breakfast in silence, Jai was constantly looking at the door, waiting for Jess to walk in. ‘You did well,’ I said to Jai, he turned around and looked at me and he sighed. ‘I hope I did enough, I’m absolutely exhausted. But I need to go to school today, after I missed  the last periods.’ Beau walked into the kitchen and put some toast on.

‘How is she?’ Beau asked getting butter out of the fridge.

‘Pretty good, I think’ I replied, and that was the honest truth. I had no idea whether she had made it through the night. ‘What are her plans for the day?’ Beau asked.

‘We’re going to do the 3L Rainbow Milk Challenge again. Jess offered to go down do the shops and buy the milk and some food colouring. I meant to ask do you want in?’ Jai asked.

‘Of course I want in!’ Beau smiled, ‘I need to redeem myself after last time!’ we broke out into laughter, if anyone had a chance to beat this thing it was me or Jai, not Beau. He has the worlds weakest stomach I swear! Beau sat down and Jai looked straight at him. ‘Are you working today?’ Jai had a very serious look on his face.

‘No, I have the day off today.’ Beau smiled, ‘What do you want?’

‘Stay home with Jess?’ Jai was looking in the direction of our room as he asked. ‘I think she’ll still need someone to look out for her, at least for today.’ Beau nodded, he and I knew how important Jess was to Jai, and neither of us wanted anything bad to happen to her. She was nice and she deserved help. ‘I’ll even drive down to the shops with her.’ Beau cared, Jai’s face returned to a smile.

‘Thanks’

JESS’S POV

I woke up, I was in Jai’s bed. I sat up and smiled, I had done it. I ran into the kitchen, Beau, Luke and Jai were sitting eating breakfast, Jai jumped up and walked over. Last night was hard, I woke up a few times. But I looked up at Jai and went back to sleep. ‘We did it!’ I yelled hugging Jai.

‘I’m so proud of you.’ He whispered into my ear.

‘I promised didn’t I?’ I said looking up into his eyes. The biggest smile crossed his face, I loved his smile, it was contagious. So I ended up smiling too.
