JESS’S POV
We headed to Myer, I spotted this gorgeous dress. Ash saw it too, ‘You have to try it on!’ Ash said putting the hanger into my hands. ‘Okay, I didn’t have a choice did I?’ I asked with a giggle.
‘No!’ She joked, ‘I’m going to grab myself something to try on then I’ll come see how it looks.’ I smiled, nodded and walked off. The shop was really quiet; I was the only one in the change rooms, or so I thought. ‘You bitch!’She said punching my in the face, ‘Ow,’ I said quietly to myself, I didn’t want to draw attention to the situation. She shoved me back; I fell straight to the floor at this point I was feeling incredibly faint. I heard my back crunch before it went completely numb, this was bad, ‘Get up!’ she said is quietly, but in a harsh voice. Then she delivered one final blow, a kick to the head, my head slammed against the wall, knocking me completely unconscious.
ASHLEIGH’S POV
I grabbed a dress off the hanger and walked to the change rooms, I screamed when I saw her. Jess was lying unconscious on the ground, there was blood gushing from her nose and lip. I dialled triple zero straight away, I was absolutely terrified. ‘Hello, my friends been bashed and she’s unconscious. Second level of Myer, Melbourne Central,’ I was shaking, ‘don’t hang up the phone, stay calm paramedics are on the way.’ I pulled the phone away from my face, the tears streamed down my face. An attendant came around the corner to see what was going on, she gasped in horror. ‘I’ve called an ambulance already,’ I said to her, ‘I didn’t see who did it to her.’ I was sobbing now; it was terrifying to see her like this. Jess’s phone was lying on the floor, it started to ring, I saw Jai’s caller ID come up so I answered it. ‘Jai its Ashleigh,’ I said quickly.
‘Hey. Where’s Jess?’ he asked I chocked, I had no idea what to say to him.
‘There’s been an accident, she needs you Jai.’ I cried.
‘Where are you?’ He asked
‘The change rooms of Myer.’ I said sitting by Jess’s side.
‘I’ll be there in a minute Ash, it’ll all be okay.’ Jai hung up the phone, his words were comforting, but he was in for a shock. Not much time passed by when Jai pushed through the crowd. ‘Oh my god,’ he said coming to sit down with me, his eyes welling up with tears. He grabbed Jess’s hand. ‘What happened?’ he asked
‘I have no idea she came to try a dress on and I found her alone.’ I was crying. Jai pulled me in for a hug.
‘It’s okay Ash, she’ll be fine.’ We waited another 5 minutes before the ambos showed up; they rushed to Jess’s side with a stretcher. ‘She’s got a back injury,’ I called, the paramedics left and came back with a neck brace and back brace. ‘How are you sure?’ Jai asked, keeping his eyes fixed on Jess.
‘I don’t,’ I replied, ‘but I didn’t want to risk it. If she fell straight backwards then it could have done some damage.’ Jai nodded, Jess was now in the stretcher, they were wheeling her out, Jai and I followed. The ambulance was just outside in the car park. ‘We can only fit one of you,’ the female paramedic said. I looked at Jai; I couldn’t take it… not again, ‘you go Jai.’ I said, watching as they lifted Jess into the ambulance.
‘Are you sure?’ He asked, looking at me.
‘Yes, she needs you. I’ll go find Luke and we’ll buy Daniel a present, just go!’ I said shoving Jai forward, he squeezed my hand, ‘it’ll all work out.’ And with that Jai jumped into the ambulance, it drove off, sirens and everything. I grabbed out my phone and called Luke.
JAI’S POV
The paramedics told me she was going to be okay, they were taking her to the Royal Melbourne Hospital. The ambos had stopped the bleeding of Jess’s nose and lip but she was covered in blood. Her face was pale, there were tears in my eyes, someone had done this to her, how could they? The paramedic asked for a parent’s number, I gave them her dad’s number, I knew he would want to know. ‘Will she wake up soon?’ I asked the paramedic. She sighed, ‘I have no idea. She obviously took a few hard blows to the head, head injuries are tricky. Under these circumstances we will leave her to wake up on her own, but if she doesn’t wake up after three days, we’ll have to take action.’ I nodded, and sighed too.
It was a short trip to the hospital, when we got out of the ambulance the paramedic asked me to wait in the waiting area. ‘But I,’ I frowned.
‘I’ll make sure someone comes to get you as soon as she is stable.’ I nodded and took a seat. I put my head in my hands; this was going to be the most painful wait ever. I got a call from Luke; I got a few dirty looks when my phone rung, but that wasn’t important right now. ‘Hey Luke,’ I answered, keeping my voice down.
‘I spoke to Beau, he finishes work in a few hours, then he’s going to drive us straight to see her. Where did they take her?’
‘Royal Melbourne Hospital,’ I said looking around for nurses.
‘How is she?’ Luke asked.
‘I haven’t been allowed in yet,’ I said frowning.
‘Oh damn, well I’ve got to go. Keep me updated.’ He said before hanging up the phone. I put my phone on silent and shoved it back into my pocket. ‘Jai Brooks?’ I heard a nurse call out; I leapt out of my seat and rushed over to her. ‘Yeah, that’s me,’ I replied following.
‘This way,’ she said leading me down a corridor. She opened the door; there in the middle of the room lay Jess. They had cleaned the blood off her face and put her into a gown. She was attached to a drip and there was oxygen flowing to her nose. I sat on the chair next to her and held her hand. The room was silent a part from the rhythmic beat of the heart monitor. The nurse left the room; I sat there, watching Jess. ‘I know you probably can’t hear me, but you can do this Jess.’ I sighed, laughing at my own stupidity.
The hours past, I sat there the entire time. Ashleigh, Luke and Beau came to visit. Beau and Luke bought Jess flowers and a teddy; they put them down on the bed side table. Ashleigh had bought some of Jess’s One Direction posters and some Blue Tack; she started sticking them up on the wall.
After they left I continued to sit and wait. I let go of her hand when I was tired and took a nap, but whenever I woke up I’d grab it again.
It had been two days, the doctors were starting to get worried now, if she didn’t wake up today they were going to take action. Luke came and joined me today, he didn’t like the thought of me being alone, and he knew that I had gotten barely any sleep over the last few days. Jess’s dad came and visited too. He spent some time with me each night, but he left because he needed to work, and their family was going to need the money to pay the hospital bills. I grabbed Jess’s hand and spoke to her, like I had been doing over and over again each day. ‘Everyone misses you Jess, were really worried. I know you can do this, please wake up.’ I said sighing before leaning back for a nap.
