S A M

Jaime and I were watching a movie, Marissa sitting across my lap. Raylin was supposed to text Jaime when the movie was over, but apparently this was a long movie.

"Its been two hours," Jaime says, pulling her phone up to her face. "She hasn't responded."

"I'm sure it's just a really long movie," I reassured her. She sighed, and dropped her phone onto her lap. I focused on the movie again, and started to pet Marissa. The dog closed her eyes, and rolled onto her back. I started to scratch her stomach, and smiled.

A call came from the house phone. I lifted Marissa off of me, sad that I didn't have her warmth on my lap. I walked over to the ringing phone.

"I'll get it," I say.

"Ok," Jaime replied. She looked a little anxious.

"Hello?" I say, picking up the phone.

"Is this the home of Jaime Everlast?"

"Yeah, this is her son, Sam. Why?"

"There was an accident involving Raylin Everlast. She was hit by a car, and in the Darmontt hospital." I froze.

"I-is is she ok?" Jaime looked over my way as I stuttered.

"She is currently sleeping in the hospital. We would appreciate it if you and your mother would stop by."

"Ok.." I say, and hung up. I took a shaky breath, and looked at Jaime. "Jaime?"

"What's wrong?" She asks. "Bad news?"

"Raylin was hit.. they said she's at the hospital." She flung up, and reached for her keys.

Marissa whimpered, and I kissed the top of her head.

"We'll be right back.."

We walked outside, and hopped into the car. I jumped in the front, the place I normally don't sit. Raylin always sits here, and I'm forced in the back.

We got to the hospital, and Jaime ran in. I followed her in, eyeing the place. We were here not even that long ago.

The place brings nothing but bad news, I guess.

I sighed, and saw Justin sitting in a chair. I sat down by him as the Jaime spoke with the people at the desk.

"What happened?" I asked. I looked at the clock to see it was now eleven forty three.

"We were walking out.. and.. Sam, is there something weird with Raylin?" He asked. I froze.

"Like what?"

"The car.. she..." he looked down, shaking his head.

"She what?" I asked.

"She made it stop. How?" I sighed.

"Are you sure that's what happened?" I asked.

"Yeah. She told me to move, and I didn't. I was petrified. Then she shoved me, and the car moved again. That's when it hit her. But she stopped that car, I'm sure of it," he says. "It's impossible, but I know what I saw."

"What you saw, was her saving you. Maybe not from death, but she risked doing what she did, knowing she could get caught, so you wouldn't get hurt," I tell him. He looked away, and nodded.

"Visitors are aloud in a few minutes. Can I have a few minutes alone with her?" He asks. "Just a few minutes? You and Jaime stay here for a bit?"

"Yeah, that's fine," I say. "Are you planning on breaking up with her now that you.. know?"

"I don't know..." he trails off. I nodded, and looked down.

People confuse me. Either your like someone, or you don't. And if anything clouds your judgement about liking them, you don't. At that point your trying to convince yourself you do.

I sighed, and slumped my head onto my hands.

This is gonna be a long night...
