Chapter Forty-Two

December rolled around the corner and surprised us all. We stayed indoors and grabbed hot chocolates in the cafeteria. Today was no different. I was sipping on my cocoa, sandwiched between the warmth of Kent and Katy. Penelope, Amanda, and Ashton were faced in front of our row. Ashton sandwiched between both girls. We huddled over our steaming cups. Katy was the only one having green tea. I could feel her body tremble slightly next to mine. She was cold.

"Are you okay?" I asked her while everyone else was discussing upcoming tests and parties.

"Yeah I'm fine. Just cold," she said, cupping her tea cup. She was wearing a baggy sweater. Her new winter-time obsession. The only time of the year she said it was acceptable and cute with tights, stockings or leggings. She alternated depending on the temperature outdoors.

It was pouring snow out there. Big fat truckloads of snow. The winter wonderland had commenced early this year. Soccer games and practices were moved to indoors since the first snowfall.

I thought of the arena Cook brought me to, two weeks ago. I had printed my script that night. He read it the next day and encouraged me to send it for submission to scriptwriting programs across the country.

I said I'd think about it. I never had anyone close to me read my work. It came to a shock that the first person to do so was Cook and that he liked it, understood it, and read it thoroughly considering he couldn't be bothered for the fiction books assigned in English class. He told me that it wasn't the same. And that my work was actually entertaining and had value to him.

"Even without hot babes."

"Yes definitely even without hot babes," he had assured.

Mom asked about him twice already but then stopped as she didn't want to pry further, I told her we were friends and that I was still very much dating Kent. She said regretfully that Kent never stops by. Since Kent has been around more often, our study sessions were less frequent. I spent most of my time studying alone or separately with Kent. I hardly got to see Katy either. She was swapped as well. Come to think of it I only see her at school and there's always Kent and our group of friends around. I couldn't believe these people were my friends. It brought me joy and a slight swelling into my heart. I met all these amazing people this semester and it was nearing the end.

Cook walked into the cafeteria, we exchanged looks and he gave me a big smirk which only meant trouble. We were friends yes, but he'll always have a knack of making me squirm even if it's now friendly motivated.

He plopped down beside Penelope.

"Who wants to attend a Christmas party?"

Cook plans to host a Christmas party on the last day of school before winter break. I was to nervous about going to Kent's house after school to participate or pay much attention to the group discussion that rose from Cook's plans.

Before I knew it I was at Kent's house, trailing behind him on creaky stairs all the way up to his room. I hadn't been here since the party.
