Chapter Ten
“So start from the very, very beginning,” Katy says for the third time. She was sitting cross legged on my bed and looking at me with wide eyes.
“Katy I told you everything twice already. Can’t I get a break? I just came out of the hospital remember?” I asked innocently.
“Well it’s not my fault you banged your head,” she answers as a matter of fact.
“Well it’s not my fault I don’t recall any of it. And I won’t repeat everything all over again,” I respond firmly.
“OK. Ok fine. It’s just weird. You must’ve got hit pretty hard for being unable to remember anything.”
“Yeah…”
“What if it was Kent’s fault? Like what if his driving was like really bad or something…” she dares to ask.
“What?” No that’s impossible,” I confirm.
Katy doesn’t say anything for a while, she was deep in thought.
“What? What is it?” I ask.
She shakes her head.
“WHAT ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT?” I half yell frustrated with this silent treatment.
No response.
“Ok it’s never a good sign when you don’t say anything. Just spit it out please,” I beg.
“It’s nothing, I was just thinking,” she finally answers.
I gasp.
“You think?”
“Hey, watch out maybe I’ll hit the other side of your head,” she threatens.
“That’s not funny,” I point out, trying to look mad.
“It kind of is a little.”
“No,” I reply coldly.
“Yes,” she grins hugely.
I try to suppress a smile of my own.
We look at each other and burst out laughing, picturing her hitting my head purposely.
“So what were you thinking?” I try again.
“Shit. You’d think with all that brain damage you wouldn’t remember how to be stubborn.”
This is why I love Katy so much. She can take something awful and make the best out of it, make it even comical.
“Nope. Not a chance, I was born stubborn. Now come on, tell me.”
“FINE,” she gives up. “I was just wondering where he was going to bring you,” she spits out quickly.
“Oh shit I forgot to ask him.”
“Hmm. So uh, how cool is it that your crush saves your life? It’s like one of those YA novels you read all the time,” she says, diverting the subject.
“Are you mocking me?” I ask defensively.
“A little, but I’m serious. How fuckin’ sick is that? Isn’t that like a dream come true?”
I take a moment to think about it before adding, “Yeah, if only I had any memory of it.”
“What time is it?” I ask suddenly.
“Ten, why?”
“Oh shit, we have school tomorrow.”
“So?”
