Chapter Forty-Six
It was New Year's Eve. Mom was painting my face. She applied glittery gold eyeshadow to my eyelids. Some shine to my cheekbones. She had spent an hour curling my hair into brown locks. The only thing I got to do was apply my eyeliner and mascara.
"You look gorgeous," she said to me at the end, admiring her handy work.
"Thanks mom; its thanks to you."
"That's not true Savannah. You're turning into a beautiful young woman."
"Mom," I warned. She was becoming all sappy and she had a trace of guilt coated in her voice. One of a parent that didn't get all the chances to watch their children grow up.
She had the day off and we spent the day lounging around and talking about mom's first New Year's Eve with dad. She was so nervous she spilled champagne all over herself but dad kissed her as if he was more in love with her in that moment than ever. I could see the stars in my mom's eyes as she spoke. It was hard for her. To keep all of these memories of dad for herself.
She was going to spend the night out with Jeffrey; grabbing dinner and watching the fireworks. She was going to get ready after I left.
My dress trailed and plunged the length of my body. There was a double dip. One in the front and a bigger one in the back. It was a sparkly shade of gold without being over the top. It was pricey but not too pricey. I couldn't justify buying a dress that would only serve for one occasion. Besides, I had to save the little money I have for a prom dress. Mom borrowed me her expensive black pumps and gold earrings.
I was waiting restlessly for Kent to show up. He wasn't excessively late but he wasn't on time either. When the doorbell rang, I jumped right up to the door with my feet bare.
"Hey" we both said at the same time. "Wow," we said, doing it again.
We laughed and I invited him in. Our eyes drinking ourselves in. We've never seen each other in formal wear. Except when we were children and that hardly counts.
He had a standard black tux but with a golden bow since he had asked me what color was my dress. This was the effort he put into his outfit. I was so thankful. It looked like we would be somewhat one of those matching couples. I was putting my heels on, he borrowed me his arm, like a gentlemen to balance myself.
"Thank you," I said, looking up at him but he was already looking down to my exposed chest.
I was straightening myself up.
"Sav," he said, his voice thick with need. "You're so hot in that dress."
If there was a time to have a cover up blush, it would be it.
My mom walked in at that moment.
"Kent!" she exclaimed.
