Chapter Thirty-Two

I tried talking to Katy about the incident but she was stubborn as a mule. There was no explanation, confirmation, information of any sort being shared or pried from her.

In gym class she shot angry glares at Penelope each time she served a birdie into the air. It wasn't an us against them game. It was a Katy vs. Penelope game to her.

At lunch time on Monday and Tuesday; I made sure Katy was eating and not just salad. I brought her favorite foods on purpose to school. I was no cook. I'm terrible at cooking even my arch nemesis Cook knew it. I prepared these meals carefully, taking my time. Buying some of it pre-made. Consulting recipes online.

On Monday Katy protested; she had her own food was her excuse. When I probed, she brought up my terrible cooking skills. I brushed her off and watched as she ate my food. The food chewing process went by slowly. It took the whole lunch time for her to eat half of the cheesy spaghetti I made for her.

On Tuesday, she said that she couldn't eat all that. But she ate all of it this time.

On Wednesday, she didn't bring any of her food. She 'apparently' ate breakfast. I asked her what she ate and she said cereal. Typical. I've never seen eat cereal or breakfast for a matter. Thus, I shook my head and handed her the tupperware. We were at the cafeteria, it was too cold to sit on the bleachers. She ripped through the bowl, eating all of it in half of the time. I was proud. We were making progress. She was just vulnerable and in a moment of weakness. I was her best friend. It was my job to help her and remind her that real food are real friends.

On Thursday, she outsmarted me. I brought her a sandwich. One of her favorites; turkey tomato with extra mayonnaise. Amanda had joined us. Amanda wasn't there that night so for Katy's sake I didn't say anything. Katy brought her own tupperware with an assortment of steamed vegetables: broccolis, corn, cauliflower, zucchini, beans, carrots, and the likes. She wasn't fooling me. A bit of everything with the worth of 150 calories give or take. I knew my share of nutrition. Everyone has tried to diet at least once. Or at least curiously glanced at nutrition facts.

Before I got to object, she turned to Amanda, "I've got an important photo shoot tonight, you should come. Sav," she turned to me, "you should join too."

"I will," I said.

"Yeah and we should grab some pizza afterwards," suggested Amanda.

I nodded encouragingly. Katy couldn't back up if we were coming with her.

"Yeah sure." She stabbed at her broccoli. Her fork said no but her mouth said yes.

I offered Amanda the turkey tomato sandwich - not wanting it to go to waste - and she gladly took it and savored it.

"Hmm so good," she said as she chewed the end of it.

I was hoping it would encourage Katy to eat substantially. They were similar in body size. Surely if Amanda can eat with no great restrictions so could Katy. Bodies acted differently but they all need proper nourishment.
