After thinking all day and night of tattoo ideas, mainly to keep my mind of me almost kissing Niall and making a total arse of myself the day before, I found myself on Louis' doorstep. I rang the bell and waited for Louis to answer the door. My heart sank when Niall's face was revealed behind the door.
"Hey Harry," he greeted stiffly.
"H-hey," I paused then shook my head, "oh! Is Louis home? I was supposed to drop by so he could cover up a tattoo for me."
"I think he's out with Liam."
"Oh." Just as I started to pivot on the balls of my feet and go back home Niall stepped back from the door.
"You can come in though I'm sure he won't be long."
Being alone with Niall after what had happened the day before was really the last thing I wanted to do but who was I to turn down alone time with a cute guy. I awkwardly stepped through the door and Niall made his way to the living room as I was taking off my boots. Was I supposed to follow him? Did he even want to spend time with me? He was probably just inviting me in to be polite. That's why I was so shocked when he peeked his head around the corner.
"You coming?" he smiled.
My heart melted at the sight of his grin and all I could do was give a weak nod and follow him down the hall. I sat down on the very opposite end of the couch from Niall and an uncomfortable silence filled the air. Should I bring up yesterday? Just say to him "hey if you think I was trying to kiss you yesterday, I wasn't. I just closed my eyes because...because my headache kicked in again and-"
"Harry?" Niall broke my train of thought.
"Hm?"
"About yesterday-" Oh god here it comes.
I sighed and leaned my head back on the couch.
"I know Louis seemed a little distant but him and Liam have been arguing a lot lately. I think they're all good now, they're out together and all."
"Oh? Oh!" my head shot back up from the couch, "well that's good. I mean them being okay now not, you know, before."
The corners of his mouth turned up for a second before silence fell upon us again.
"So, what tattoo are you covering?" Niall asked, leaning in closer to me.
I rolled up my sleeve and lightly traced my finger over the A embedded in my skin.
"How come?" Niall raised his eyes from the tattoo to my eyes with a look of pure curiosity.
"Zayn gave it to me," I grimaced.
"Ah," he leaned back against the couch, "why were you even with the guy?"
I looked at him in surprise, expecting him to make sure it was okay to ask or apologize for being so upfront. All he did was raise his eyebrows prompting me to answer.
"I don't know," I gritted through my teeth.
"If it were me in your situation, I would dump the fucker before he even got the chance to leave me," Niall proudly stated.
"Believe me I tried, it wasn't so easy," I sighed.
"Why?" Niall asked sympathetically.
"He just, I didn't know many people here, and we were living together," I stumbled over my words.
"Oh I see," Niall smirked, clearly seeing through my lies, but thankfully didn't push me to tell him any more.
"So tell me about your ex boyfriend," I quickly took the attention off of me.
"His name is Josh," Niall began, "we met in my last year of high school. I knew he was the only openly gay kid in our school so I got to know him a little better. We started dating pretty quickly after we started talking. I wasn't really ready to come out yet but he promised not to tell anyone. I thought that was so sweet. He was my everything." Niall sighed.
"What went wrong?" I thought out loud.
"He used me," Niall said, barely above a whisper.
"For what?"
"Sex," Niall kept his glance firmly on the floor, "he pressured me into sleeping with him before I was really ready. Then he outed me to the entire school, telling everyone how we fucked," his voice shook.
"I'm so sorry," I gently rubbed Niall's back as he shook gently under my touch.
He quickly wiped away a tear, thinking I hadn't noticed he was crying. We sat there for a moment with my hand on his back before he pulled me into a tight hug, which he pulled away from moments later.
"Sorry," he sniffed, "we hardly know each other and here I am crying to you."
"No, Niall really it's okay," I assured him.
He gave me a weak smile. "So what are you going to cover your tattoo up with?"
"Uh I was just going to get 'something great' put there and use it as the 'a' in 'great'."
Niall pulled my arm into his lap and lightly rubbed his finger over my skin, then looked at me eagerly, waiting for more explanation.
"I'm writing a song and I called it 'Something Great'." I explained.
"Sick! Can I hear it?" he said, sounding remarkably more upbeat than before.
"I really only have a few lines down and-"
I was interrupted by the front door slamming shut followed by another bang. Louis came storming into the living room, clutching his hand, until he noticed Niall and I and threw a smile on his face.
"Oh hey guys!" he greeted. As I got a better look at his face I noticed his eyes looked bloodshot and puffy.
"Are you alright?" Niall asked, clearly also noticing the redness in Louis' eyes.
"Yeah it's just chilly out there, and the wind makes your eyes burn you know?" Louis rambled, "So! Ready for your tattoo, Harry?"
"And your hand?" Niall continued.
"It's nothing, I'm fine. Really, I am," Louis assured, "come on Harry."
I got up from the couch and followed Louis out of the living room with Niall trailing behind me. Louis led me down the same hall Niall had taught me how to play guitar and opened the door next to the music room.
"Let me guess, the tattoo room?" I jeered.
Louis gave me a light punch on the shoulder before leading me into the clean, white room. A smell very similar to the smell of a doctors office filled my nose as I looked around the room in awe of all the equipment Louis owned.
"This is amazing Lou," I gaped.
"Thanks, take a seat," Louis pulled on clear gloves, "any ideas of what you want?"
"Yeah I wanted it to say 'something great'." I said, pulling up my sleeve yet again.
"It's a song he's writing," Niall added.
Louis nodded and brought the needle to my skin. The pain was completely bearable after all the tattoos I had collected. Just moments later Louis sat back to admire his work.
"What's wrong?" Louis asked quickly.
I hadn't even realized I looked upset. "It's just, this is going to sound stupid but, the A is still in his writing. I just want to get rid of him completely."
Before anyone could do anything, Niall grabbed the needle and traced over the A himself.
"There," he grinned, "now it's in my writing."
