MJ's POVBuzz. Buzz. Buzz. My alarm clock shook me awake. It read '5 AM'. Yes! I would have some time at the beach before school. I pulled on my swim suit and an over sized sweatshirt. One of my gifts from my thirteenth birthday yesterday was that I now have permission to bike to the beach whenever I want, and it was already loving it! I walk down the stairs to the kitchen to see Dad making us both coffee. "Good morning, starfish," I roll my eyes at his weird nicknames for me and sip at my coffee. "We're going to do something special today, so you'll miss school." I smile. "Okay, can I go to the beach before we leave?" My dad shakes his head no. "We've got to be there in ten minutes." I put my mug in the dishwasher and go to shove my very frizzy, short hair into a ponytail. When I return my dad is sitting at the kitchen table with a picture frame in hand. "I should probably tell you something before we go. Are you okay with that?" I nod and take a seat near him. "An old friend of mine... she's on a special kind of business trip, and she's near here today, so we're going to go see her. You haven't seen her in a while, and she's going to tell you something you probably won't believe, so just bear with her." He leaves the picture on the table and I manage to glance at it before Dad leads me to the car. There were two girls and a boy, all in blue, green, or red costumes. Probably an old Halloween party Dad went to or something. We make the short drive to the beach and park near a big section of rocks. "Hello?" Dad calls. "Are you here?" "Eric! Is that you?" A voice calls from behind the rocks. We venture around them to see a lady in her mid-thirties, wearing a long, silvery dress and a tiara in her long bluish-brown hair, stretched out on the sand. "Oh, Madi, I haven't seen you in so long!" "I go by MJ, for Madi Junior." I say bitterly. This woman made me feel strange. "Okay then, MJ, you're thirteen, you're old enough." She pulled a book out from a rock near me, called Mermaids: A History. I quickly scanned it. "So?" The woman smiled. "You're my daughter, MJ, and that makes you a mermaid." She pulled up her dress a bit to reveal a aquamarine fin. I looked at my dad to explain this was all a magic trick, but he smiled. "I was one too, twenty years ago. Before your mother and I defeated the Mermaid Crusher and lost our friend Madi, your namesake." "Here, I'll prove it." She started to splash me with water when a boy, about my age, jogged past. He stopped for a second, and it was if time slowed down when he looked at me. His eyes flashed grey, my grey, and just as the splash hit us, we both fell onto the rocks, sporting purple and navy blue tails. "Told you so." Whispered my mom, the queen of the ocean herself, Crystal Waters.

Fantasy"He said that when the time was right, one of our children would find one, and become half and half." "Half and half?" I asked. "Crystal," she said "I think you're half-mermaid." Only then did I see the patch of aquamarine scales growing from under...
