"You!" Eric shouts. "Get away from her!" I turn around and see... "Madi?" "Not quite, darling." The woman purrs. "That was my human name, but -as fate would have it- I'm really the Mermaid Crusher. It's so much funner!" She spins around and puts air bubbles around each of us. It's fine for Madi, who had been started to look green from all the water she was taking in, but for me and Eric (still in our mer forms), it's pure torture as we gasp for nonexistent water. We finally lose our tails and can breathe in the air. "That's better," The Mermaid Crusher states. "Your tail looks just like your father's did Crystal." "Wow." I whisper. Raising my voice, I say: "Why do you care so much about him?" She laughs, nasally and cruel, like someone who just enjoyed tripping a kindergartner. "He was my first and only love. I met him when I was in high school. I went to the pier one night and from then on I knew he was perfect. I just needed to develop scales for him to want me back. I did, but to get them I had to promise to carry on the sea witch's business one day. After the procedure, she warned me we might not be blood mates. It was too late then. She had been right, but I enjoy being the next mermaid crusher. Who's that behind you, boy?" "I'm Madi Hermrcures, which I'm apparently smart enough to realize that means I'm related to you somehow." "Yes, you are my daughter, and the one to carry on our family business!"
