"She's been in surgery for nearly an hour now." I told Mrs. Ashley through the phone. Ethan sat in a chair in the waiting room, staring straight forward at the wall. He hadn't blinked probably ever since we got here, and it was starting to freak me out seeing that was quite a while ago.

"Do you know if there's any chance.." Mrs. Ashley sniffed, not daring to finish her sentence, but I could fill the blanks in myself. "I haven't talked to anyone yet, this is all I know for now, I'm sorry." I apologized, running my free hand through my hair.

"Okay." She breathed, and I felt extremely sorry for her. "I'll make some quick calls to the hospital and make sure you guys are on the visitors list. Promise me you'll call me when you know more?" She asked me desperately. "Yes, of course. I promise." I assured her.

"Uhh-, Grayson?" I heard her ask hurriedly, before we ended the call. I hummed. "Please stay with her until I'm there, no matter what she says." She told me. "Don't worry about it, Mrs. Ashley. We won't leave her side." I told her, before saying our goodbyes and ending the call. Mrs. Ashley and we kept contact over the past few weeks, solely because I thought she should know about all this. I got her number by going on Shay's Skype and sending her friends a message, pretending I was her. I knew Shay wanted to keep us a secret still, and we both agreed on that for now.

I put my phone back in my pocket and walked back to Ethan, placing my hand on his shoulder. "Yo, you wan't some water?" I asked him. His head snapped up at me and he nodded.

I walked over to the water cooler and grabbed two plastic cups, filling both of them with water while my mind drifted off to Shay again. Why wasn't anyone giving us information?

Mrs. Ashley called up the hospital to make sure they allowed us into Shay's room during the day and night, and gave them permission to share the information about her state and health with us. But so far I wasn't seeing much of that happen yet.

I handed Ethan his cup of water and sat down next to him, throwing my head back and closing my eyes. I was tired as hell. It was about 2 am right now, and all Ethan and I could do was wait for any information, and for Shay to get out of surgery. I think Ethan was feeling as uneasy about the situation as I was.

I had been resting my eyes for about two minutes, nearly drifting into sleep, when I heard a female voice calling Ethan and I's full name.

I shot up, nudging my brother and looking around the waiting room. There stood a doctor in the entrance of the waiting room, waiting for us with a black clipboard in her hand. I stood up and rushed towards her, Ethan following after me.

"I've been told you two are staying with patient Shailene Ashley in Mrs. Ashley's absence?" She said to us. "Uhh, yes." I answered, giving Ethan a look. "I'm doctor Jones, Shailene's nursing director." She introduced herself, shaking our hands with a polite smile on her face. She seemed really young still.. She was tall, had her long, brown hair tied up in a ponytail. She looked like she was around 25 years old. "Shailene just got out of a succesful surgery, and has been moved to a private room as requested by Mrs. Ashley. She's awake right now, I can show you her room." She offered. Ethan and I both nodded. She told us to follow her, and walked down the hall towards the elevator.

"I-, I saw her wrist when she was being carried into the ambulance.. Can you, tell us..." I trailed off as she pressed the button to floor number three. "Yes, but it's not very pretty." She warned, giving us a difficult look before continuing.

"Basically what happened is that her wrists had both been cut. A tendon named the palmaris longus, situated in the underside of your wrist, had been cut through in both her left and right wrist, and although this may seem like a big deal, it's really nothing to worry about." She assured us. "The palmaris longus is known to be a vestigial structure, body traits left over from evolution that have no discernible use for us modern human. Sort of like your tailbone, or your appendix." She explained to us, so Ethan and I could understand.
