The 2nd and 3rd years started cheering and wooing after Ron had told the 1st years what their last test would be.
"It seems like just yesterday when we had to do this," reminisced Zach.
"Zach, you sound like an old man," teased Ron.
"Well, we are old!" said Zach while wrapping his arms around Wil and Matthew, another 3rd year's shoulders.
Ron chuckled and continued with explaining the games.
"I've already arranged the teams for these next few games. There are six 1st years, so each team will have two 1st years and three returners. There will be three games so each team can go up against each other once. Each quarter will be 5 minutes long. These short games are for me to see how well your skills have held up over this past week. Take these games seriously kids," he paused and then smirked, "You'll know whether you're on JV or Varsity after these games."
The 1st years glanced around at each other with excited smiles and the upperclassmen couldn't help but get hyped up as well.
"Alright, let's get started. Some of you boys will have to sit out the games and watch from the sidelines."
"It's all good Coach. We know the drill," one of the members said holding a thumbs up.
Ron smiled in approval and continued, "Listen up everyone. Here are the teams: Team 1 will be Matthew, Daniel, Jaiden, Derek and Aaron. Team 2 will be Wil, Garrett, Emerson, Sam and Ricky."
"Fuck yeah!" cheered Sam.
Sam and Ricky gave each other an enthusiastic high five.
"And Team 3 will be Zach, Trevor, Marshall, Zane and Charlie. Now, let's get everything off the court and prepare for these games. Teams 1 and 2 will be going first."
Everyone helped set up their court for the next few games. Ron handed out colored jerseys to everyone and gave them a 10 minute warm up. When that was over, it was finally time to start.
The teams lined up on the court and got ready for the jump ball. Will and Matthew faced each other before the jump and smirked. When Ron blew the whistle, they both leaped high into the air, but Will won and flicked the ball over to Emerson. When Team 2 began invading Team 1's side of the court, Derek ran straight over to Emerson and stopped him from going any farther by guarding him with his long arms.
"Hoh. Would you look at that. Derek's got great defense skills," commented Ron.
"Emerson, don't get beat by a 1st year!" called out one of the members on the bench.
While keeping the ball away from Derek, Emerson called back, "Like hell I will!" as he passed it off to his left. He had caught a glimpse of someone running past defense to open themselves up, so he took the chance and passed it off to them. Sam smiled as the pass came to her. She snatched it and began to dribble it down the court.
"Don't let the midget beat you guys!" announced another teammate.
Before she could make a move, Daniel began to guard her, but Sam swiftly dodged and spun around him. Daniel lost his balance after attempting to guard her, which made him late in chasing after her. Sam dashed down the rest of the court and jumped for a layup. As the ball swooshed into the net, Sam landed on the ground with a soft thud. She turned to look at the rest of her team.
Everyone in the gym had dumbfounded expressions on their faces except Ricky, who wore a proud smile.
"Whoa, did you see that!"
"The midget is actually super fast!"
"Dude, stop calling him a midget! His name is Sam."
Ricky walked over to Sam and gave her a high five, and soon, the rest of her team was also surrounding her offering a round of high fives. Once they finished, she looked at the boys on the other team and smiled at them, not with the intention to look down on them, but one offering a challenge. They all smiled back at her and Ron instantly noticed the influence she had towards the other players.
