Dodgeball Rules: There are 6 balls, split into 2 even groups near the ends of the centerline. During the opening rush (when the game starts), you may only grab the balls to your right. You are out if: 1) you step on or over a sideline or centerline; 2) a thrown live ball hits your body; and 3) you throw a live ball and it is caught by an opponent. A thrown live ball can only hit out 1 player. Thrown balls that hit the ground, the wall, other balls, or other objects before hitting the opponent are considered dead balls and are ineligible to hit players out. You may block a thrown ball with a held ball. However, if you drop the blocking ball during the act of blocking, or if you fail to make a clean block (as in the thrown ball still ends up hitting or grazing your body afterwards), you are out. If you are out, line up on the side in the order you got out (think of it as being in a "resurrection" line). If your teammate catches a ball, the player at the start of your team's "resurrection" line comes back into play after touching the wall (the teammate must be in the line at the time of the catch to be eligible to be brought back in). You can only hold a ball for 10 seconds, afterwards, it will be considered dead. Dead balls need to be rolled over immediately to the other team. If the game comes down to 1 player per side, they have 10 seconds to hit each other out; if not, "Showdown" comes into effect. The game is paused, each player gets two balls, two balls are lined up at the ends of the centerline, and the centerline is dissolved. The first player to get the other player out wins.
____________________________________After their short break was over, everyone headed back to the gym, either to cheer or participate in the Dodgeball games. Sam and Oliver waved bye to the others as the two of them made their way onto the courts to find their team.
Sam and Oliver seemed to be giving off an intense vibe because everyone they passed took a step away from them, even their own team.
"You guys seem pumped up," said their teammate, Cody, with a laugh.
"Hell yeah, we are! Our team is gonna kick some ass," said Sam.
She held her hands out to her team and watched as they smiled and simultaneously high fived either one. After that, she swung around and pointed to the side of the gym with the most red team members. Many people from the audience turned their attention to her. Sam then sprung forward and ran towards them. She started raising her arms up and down as a way to tell the audience to get pumped up.
"LET'S GO!!!" she shouted, directing her cheer towards the red team.
Red team members started springing up from their seats to cheer along with Sam, turning the gym's volume level into a crescendo. Sam's Dodgeball teammates got excited from her display, so they ran over to join her team pump-up. Oliver jogged over as well, stopping next to Sam and giving her a little shoulder nudge. She glanced over and grinned in between her shouts to the audience.
Before they knew it, the other Dodgeball groups from the red team joined in, making the gym even more rambunctious. The blue team was stunned; they couldn't even cheer back at the same level, so they didn't even try.
When it was time to start the event, the announcer struggled for a few minutes trying to calm everyone down. Once he did, the Dodgeball teams oriented themselves and got ready for the event to start.
* * *
The event flew by and Sam and Oliver's team won the 1st year games without question. They were too overpowering together and destroyed every team they went against. Their team easily took first and qualified to play the bonus rounds in January against the upperclassmen.
Once the games were over, Sam and Oliver said bye to the rest of their team and headed over to where the PSSC and Honey were waiting at the bottom of the bleachers. They then flopped onto the floor from exhaustion and cracked up when they almost landed on each other.
"You guys were great out there," complimented Jack.
"Seriously though. You two were like an epic tag team," added Ricky.
"Nah, I think you scared most of the other teams with your crazy eyes," laughed Opal
"Thanks, guys," Oliver said with a small chuckle.
He then turned to Sam and they exchanged their traditional fist bump with big smiles.
"Do you guys want a drink? I'll go get you one real quick," offered Opal.
"Oh, could I get a SmartWater?" asked Sam.
"Red Gatorade for me! Thank you, Opal," said Oliver.
"Thanks girl!" called Sam.
Opal flashed them a thumbs up as she started heading over to the vending machines.
"Wait, Opal! I'll go with you," said Ricky, stumbling after her.
Sam watched them walk around the corner together and smirked.
"He's so obvious right?"
Sam glanced up to see Jack staring over to where she was just looking.
She laughed and said, "You got that right. He's like a huge puppy."
Jack chuckled at her comment.
"You mean Ricky and Opal?" asked Honey.
Sam and Jack turned their heads to face Honey. She looked back and forth between them and said, "What? He likes her, doesn't he?"
Sam let out a loud, short laugh.
"I'm dying because everyone is noticing how obvious he is."
"Wait, what's obvious? Who?" asked Oliver.
Sam, Jack, and Honey gave Oliver a blank stare.
"Ollie, you've always been dense with this type of thing," jabbed Honey.
Jack held his hand over his mouth to avoid letting a laugh escape; the irony of the situation was too much for him to handle.
"What thing?!" said Oliver, shooting up from his seated position.
Sam stood up and placed a hand on his shoulder.
"One day you'll understand."
"But what does that mean! Guys!"
While Sam, Jack, and Honey burst into laughter at Oliver's obliviousness, Opal and Ricky returned with the drinks. Sam and Oliver thanked them and then they all headed out of the gym so the volunteer teachers could arrange it back into a basketball court for the Group Basketball Games.
