The next day came and after school, so did the student's sports practices. Sam hobbled to get changed for the weight room because she was still getting used to her handicap leg. Once she clumsily finished getting her clothes on, she headed over to meet with Rhett.
"Yo!" she called out when she saw him writing exercises onto the whiteboard.
"Hey Sam!" he called back happily. She had a feeling he was glad to have someone to train again.
Once he was done writing, he began showing her the new exercises for her workout that day. When he had finished, Sam went back to the whiteboard to write down everything in her notebook.
All of a sudden, the door opened and a boy with a cast on right arm walked in. Sam looked up from her notebook to see who it was and recognized the boy right away.
"Oh! You're the guy who fell from the pole vault yesterday!"The boy was jumped from her sudden outburst, not expecting anyone else to be in the room.
"What did they tell you about your arm?" she asked.
He looked down at his cast and then over to her with tired eyes.
"It's obviously broken. It's going to take a while to heal," he replied lifelessly.
Sam blinked a few times at his response.
Jeez, someone's got a stick up their ass, she thought.
The boy looked around the gym until his eyes caught Rhett. Rhett noticed and walked over to greet him. Sam stealthily listened in on their conversation as they began discussing his situation. Apparently, the boy was in the same situation as Sam since he couldn't do anything at practice, so he was told to get stronger on weaker areas of his body at rehabilitation.
As Rhett finished talking with him, he handed him a notebook.
"Go ahead and sit over there next to Sam. You can follow his example," he instructed, "We will start on your exercises once I finished writing down your workout."
The boy walked over towards where Sam was and sat as far away from her as he could, practically hanging off the edge of the bench. He opened the notebook and stared down at it for a while. Eventually, he looked up with a confused expression.
Sam peeked over at him and noticed his eyebrows scrunched together.
"Once he writes your workout on the board, you copy it down into the notebook and you keep track of the amount of weight you do along the way," she offered.
He glanced over at her with an unmotivated glare and then back to the notebook, letting out a heavy sigh.
"That seems kind of obvious doesn't it?" he jabbed.
Sam felt her body twitch with irritation.
You stupid fucking brat, then why did you look so confused a moment ago?!
Controlling her anger, she asked him, "What is your name by the way?"
He looked over at her with an expression that made it seem like it was a hassle.
"It's Toby."
She smiled and offered a hand to shake.
"I'm Sam."
He stared at her hand for a moment and then turned away.
ASKDJHKDGHKASDKASDJA, thought Sam, her mind exploding.
She reached forward and grabbed onto his good hand. He looked up at her with wide, surprised eyes. She tightened her grip and squeezed his hand.
"Nice. To. Meet. You. Toby," she growled.
Sam could Toby was a little bit frightened by her actions as he tried to yank his hand away, but she didn't care.
His attitude pissed her off.
(Rhett was trying so hard to control his laughter because of Sam and Toby's interactions behind him)
* * *After the workout, Sam stormed out of the weight room (on crutches) and headed to the locker rooms. Super annoyed by Toby's attitude, she started throwing on her clothes too aggressively and accidentally bumped her bad foot on the bench. She let out a long, pain-filled squeak and then fell over the bench. As the pain subsided, she pushed herself up and sat down on top of the bench. Bumping her foot allowed her to calm down and stop thinking about Toby for a moment. She took a few deep breaths, finished changing, and then left the locker room.
Since her weight training ended a little bit before basketball was over, Sam decided to go visit everyone in the gym. When she entered, she saw them doing some practice games. The coach broke them into groups of 5 and had them scrimmage against each other.
Sam stopped a little past the doorway, leaning on her crutches comfortably and smiled as she watched her teammates. All of a sudden, Emerson jumped up and smacked the ball away from being shot, causing it to fly over to where Sam was standing. Sam instinctively dropped her crutches and balanced on her left leg, keeping her right foot off the ground as she caught the ball right before it slammed into her.
The whole gym when silent and then she peeked her head around the ball.
"What's up guys?" she said innocently.
They all sighed a sigh of relief and laughed at Sam's casual comment to almost getting smacked in the face.
"Damn it Sam!" yelled Kai.
"I thought you were gonna nail him Emerson!" added Daniel.
"I'm so sorry Sam!" exclaimed Emerson.
All of the boys ran over to her to say hi and see if she was all right. Emerson picked up her crutches and apologized again. She told him to stop and that she was completely fine. They chatted for a little bit until Ron started yelling at them.
"Guys, c'mon! I know you love Sam, but we aren't finished here! You can't leave until you finish these games!"
"Awh, lighten up Ron" teased Zach.
"Zach you little shit. You can play a full team all by yourself if you would like!"
"NO! Coach?!"
While the team erupted in laughter, Toby walking by the open gym doors on his way to the cafeteria. He glanced over at the commotion coming from the gym to see Sam surrounded by all of her teammates while they all laughed and smiled together.
He clicked his tongue at them and continued walking towards the cafeteria with a frown.
Even with that inviting personality, Sam will soon treat me like everyone else does.
To be continued...
