Hayley

Lewis grabbed her waist from behind and lifted her off her feet and she giggled like a child. He kissed her on the cheek; his lips were so soft she could barely feel them there. When Lewis let her go, he grabbed at her hand, carefully placing his fingers in between hers and rubbed his thumb over her delicate skin, sending chills down her spine. This became the morning gossip session of every, single girl at school. She felt so ecstatic, she made every moment last. The green-eyed monster was clearly catching up to some of those girls as they all stared, breathlessly: clearly because of how handsome he looked, in their direction. One of the girls she recognised was the haughty, Karla; you couldn’t miss her perfectly pouted lips, over glossed with bright pink lip gloss and her nose high in the air with disgust. Although she was quite the stuck up snob, she was extremely beautiful and Hayley couldn’t help but envy her. Why didn’t he go for someone like her? Why Me?

“Looks like you got some new friends.” Lewis teased as he gestured towards Karla and her posse, flipping their hair and flouncing past. She just smiled silently; she didn't like the sense of having girls resenting her because of what she had. Lewis noticed there was something wrong and turned towards her. He put his warm hands on her shoulders and reassured her that they were going to be fine, no-one would get between them. He linked his pinky with hers and squeezed,

“Pinky-Promise, remember?” Lewis said, grinning at her. She felt safe with him around, like nothing could ever hurt her again.

“Pinky-Promise.” She replied. Those girls, their glares, it bugged her and he could tell. He gently planted a kiss on her forehead and said,

“There's a reason I'm with you and not with them.” Slowly she regained her confidence.

That night she sat up thinking about why he chose her above all those other girls, they were beautiful, “...and well I'm just ordinary. I mean, I guess I'm pretty but not nearly as gorgeous as those girls.” She made herself some hot tea and settled in bed with one of her all-time favourite novels, romance was her favourite genre. It seemed to her like her life had become like one of her romance novels. But then again...How long would this last? Life is no fairy-tale, it’s never perfect... You never get your Prince Charming, but she was with the perfect man. How much longer would he stick around? She turned off her pale lilac lamp on her bedside table and closed her eyes, cautiously easing her breathing and drifting slowly into a deep sleep.

Black water swirled around their legs, clawing at them and pulling them over. As her head resurfaced she couldn’t find him, he had disappeared into the murky water. She dived back in, feeling desperately around for a sign he was down there, relying on her sense of touch. She couldn’t open her eyes. The water burned into them, like an acid. She came up for air and swallowed in large gulps of the pure air around her.

“Lewis!” she wailed. Where was he? She looked around. It was blurry; the water had obscured her vision completely. Far down the river she saw it. A pale, grey-looking object. It was floating above the surface, moving quickly along with the strong current. His face was almost unrecognisable. “Lewis.” She whispered.

Waking up with a jolt, she exhaled loudly, a sigh of relief, it was only a dream. Hayley couldn't imagine losing him, not now. Not like that. She picked up her watch to check the time, it was just after midnight. She rubbed her eyes and yawned, her eyes glossed with moisture. Then she heard it, a faint sound, she wasn't sure what it was. A clink. Soon it turned into a loud knock on her balcony window. Hayley jumped to her feet, her hand brushed across her night gown. She tied it on loosely and crept over to the window. Hayley opened the door leading to the patio of the balcony and as she did so, a wall of ice cold air gushed at her. She pulled the corners of her gown closer together and stepped onto the crisp tiles.

“Hello?” Hayley whispered into the darkness. A puff of vapour clouds spilled out of her mouth as she spoke. There was an eerie silence. Nothing.

“Hello?!” She whispered a little louder this time. Walking over to the edge of the balcony, Hayley placed her hands hesitantly on the frost that had collected on the wall. She stood on her toes and peered over the edge, trying to focus in the gloom of the night.

“Did I wake you up?” His voice, that soft but husky voice, it was him, it had to be!

“Lewis!” She felt her heart ripple in her chest.

“Oh, no I, I was awake.” She stuttered.

“Oh good.” There was a rustle of leaves and then a soft thud. Lewis pulled her into his strong and safe arms. He was warm, as usual. She held onto him, wrapping her arms inside of his hoodie. He kissed her on her forehead and played with a few strands of her hair, twisting it around his fingers.

“What are you doing here?” Hayley mumbled, her face lying on his chest.

“I needed to make sure you were okay, I know that you didn't have such a great day at school so I wanted to clarify if we,” he paused, “are we okay, Hayz?” She was too tired to answer so she just squeezed him tighter and nodded. He exhaled loudly, clearly pleased with her reaction. His chest heaved as he did so.

“Thank God…” he mumbled as she quickly cupped her hand over his mouth.

“Shhh, you are going to wake up my parents.” Hayley smiled a weak but warm smile at him. His blue eyes still seemed to sparkle, even without any light.

“It’s freezing out here, come inside.” She whispered as she grabbed his hand and pulled him into her room. Hayley yawned again and sat on her bed, patting the spot next to her, indicating for him to sit there. He sat down and took her hands,

“You look exhausted, you need to sleep. I need to go.” He started to get up, she tugged him back.

“Please don't go, I won't be able to sleep if you leave.” He looked at her, smiled shyly and then leaned in to kiss her. She kissed him gently and then lay back onto her pillows. He leaned over her and brushed her hair off her face, smoothed his thumb over her bottom lip and then kissed her again. She pulled him down, closer; she wanted to feel his warmth against her. He stopped just centimetres from her, but did not stop kissing her. She could feel his body heat; it was like a magnet, drawing her closer.

“I can't stay. What if we get caught?” He mumbled between kisses.

“Please don't leave me, please.” She begged him. He sat up next to her and stared out the door. He turned his torso, looking at her with yearning eyes.

“Okay,” he said with a sigh, giving in to her pleading, “where do I sleep?” She lifted the covers and cocked her head to one side,

“Over here silly, please keep me warm.” He raised an eyebrow at her,

“Hayz…” he began.

“I promise it’s just to sleep, we won't do anything illegal.” She chuckled silently and shook her head. He smiled at her guiltily and turned to lie facing her. She breathed in deeply as she wrapped her arms around him trying to gather all of his warmth. Entangling herself with him, she felt safe and out of dangers’ evil clutches. He held her close and kissed her forehead softly and they both dozed off into a sweet slumber.
