Lewis
Karla and him sat at the kitchen table in silence, sipping on their coffee. Both unsure of what to say to each other. Lewis reached across the table and took a hold of Karla’s hand. Karla looked into his eyes. Her emotions were unreadable. Lewis noticed a small gold ring on her pinky; he twirled it around on her finger.
“What’s this for?” He smiled at her sweetly.
“Oh, that...” Her voice trailed off as she watched him moving the ring around on her finger. “It’s from my Dad; he bought it for me before he passed away a few years ago.” Lewis instantly stopped twirling it and just held her hand.
“I, I’m sorry. I didn’t know...” He felt awful for mentioning it.
“It’s alright, it’s just very special to me, and I never take it off.” She placed her other hand over his and smiled at him.
“It’s beautiful.” Lewis said, trying to cover up his embarrassment. She let out a laugh.
“Thanks.” Her eyes flicked from his eyes to their hands, still folded together. She cleared her throat and slowly and awkwardly retracted her hands.
“Well, this has been great and everything but I should really get going.” She glanced at the clock on the kitchen wall.
“My mother will be worrying.”
“Oh, how rude of me, I’m so sorry. Thank you so much for staying with me, Karla.” He smiled warmly at her.
“My pleasure. If you need me tomorrow, I’m just a phone call away. You know I’ll be there in an instant.” Lewis led her to the front door and opened it for her.
“Thank you again. Goodnight.” She breathed in, nodded and gave him a brief hug.
“Night.” She whispered into his ear. Lewis leaned down and kissed her softly on the cheek. She raised her eyebrows at him.
“Lewis,” She began but before she could continue Lewis kissed her gently on the lips. As he pulled away her eyes were still closed and her lips still puckered. Lewis flashed her a smile.
“Drive safe.”
